A challenge to the one question rule at all candidates’ night

To the Expositor:

Sincere thanks to The Expositor for sponsoring the “Meet the Candidates Night” on May 21.

While I agree with the format in general, I am troubled by the “one question only” rule. That rule ensures that the questioner does not have the opportunity to either dispute the candidate’s answer or follow up with a second more particular question.

Since politicians and would-be politicians have usually been well schooled in the art of the “circular response,” their answer to the first question very often only reflects the “party line.”

By allowing a response or second question from the questioner, we might actually be better able to learn something of the candidate’s knowledge base regarding that particular issue.

I hope that the format for the next public political meeting may include the adoption of “the second question.”

Sincerely,
Mike Wilton
