1928 – 2013
The family of Allan Farquhar is sad to announce his passing in his 84th year. Son of Amy (nee Wiber) and Senator Thomas Farquhar (deceased). Brother of Stan (Maisie) deceased, Tom (Marion) deceased, (Linda), John (deceased) (Freda), sister Ruth Ashley (Jack) deceased. He was a popular uncle to many nieces and nephews. He will be deeply missed by his wife of 63 years, Joy (nee Collins), daughter Jane (Larry) and sons Dave (Nina) and Don (Corrie). He greatly enjoyed his grandchildren Shera, Steve (Stacey), Rachel, Hailey, Carleigh, Danica, Megan and Cooper. Four great-grandchildren, Anique, Rae, Jada and Luke added to the fun, especially when everyone joined together at the family camp on McGregor Bay or got together for special occasions such as their 60th wedding anniversary at Great Wolf Lodge. Al was raised on the family farm in Mindemoya. He attended Guelph Agricultural College, coming back to the Island to start into the dairy business. He delivered milk door to door by horse and buggy and Molly knew the route as well as he did. Thos. Farquhar and Sons Company branched out into various economic ventures. This business tradition continues to thrive today through the efforts of their children and grandchildren, supported by numerous employees. Today Farquhar’s ice cream and milk products are delivered by transport all over Northern Ontario. He has left his footprint. Al was an active member of the Lions Club and Masonic Lodge for many years and sponsored numerous local events and charities through the business. Always a sports fan, he loved hockey as a youth and told great stories of racing home to do farm chores and then hitching up the horse and sleigh to attend his games. He was active in baseball and curling. He loved the Blue Jays, most of the time, and took in their annual spring training games in Florida. Al was an avid golfer whose steady temperament made him a great person to play with. Even though his health wore him down over time, his golf game always seemed to remain sharp. Like so many proud Canadians, few places were more important than camp. From the first one on the channel near the swing bridge in Little Current, to LaCloche Lake where Massey friends would gather for sing-a-long parties, life on the lake was unbeatable. The last thirty years on McGregor Bay added many more family memories. Al liked nothing more than pulling the kids on skis or tubes and ending the day with a camp sauna, a frosted mug and a refreshing dip in Georgian Bay. The family will receive relatives and friends at Bourcier Funeral Home in Espanola on Thursday, July 4, 2013 from 2 pm to 4 pm and 7 pm to 9 pm. If so desired, memorial tributes may be made to the Espanola Hospital Foundation Cardiac System or to a charity of your choice.
