Horse riders thank drivers

To the Expositor:

Spring is here and with the warmer weather we horse owners are itching to get out on the trails to enjoy our hobby. This means we often have to travel on highways and byways to get to the quieter sideroads and trails.

When riding last year in the Mindemoya area we were very pleased with the level of respect and kindness shown to us as we travelled with the car traffic! The roads are narrow and some of the ditches are very deep and sharp. As riders we try our best to follow the rules and to get as far off as we can—believe me, we don’t want to be out in traffic or causing any crowding on the road.

I am hoping drivers will remember that horses are large and unpredictable prey animals that can have a melt down over a seemingly insignificant object or noise. Even the most experienced horse is never 100 percent ‘bomb proof.’ Giving us a wide berth is not only safer for us but everyone else on the road as well. Keeping dogs on their own property is also helpful.

So I thank you all in advance for your courtesy and kindness. We hope for an accident free summer and fun on the trails. And please don’t honk your horn—just a simple wave is appreciated. Oh yes, we will work to pick up any horse droppings in residential areas. I thank you so much in advance for your time and consideration. Bring on summer!
