WHITEFISH FALLS–On Saturday, May 4 at 1 pm, officers from the Espanola Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a report that a woman had fallen into the water in the Whitefish Falls area, Curtin Township.
Officers along with EMS, fire department and members from the North Shore Search and Rescue attended the scene.
Investigation revealed the woman was attempting to rescue her dog that had gone into the fast flowing current of the Whitefish River to retrieve a ball. While laying down and reaching for her dog, she fell in the current and within a few seconds, she was submerged.
She was located a short time later by the OPP helicopter and with the assistance and the use of a civilian’s boat she was retrieved from the water. The woman was taken by land ambulance to Espanola Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
She is identified as Grace Gail Milne, age 56, of Sudbury.
A post mortem is scheduled for Monday, May 6, 2013 in Sudbury.
Officers would like to remind the public of the dangers of cold fast flowing water at this time of year. This is not the first time a life has been taken by the fast flowing water of the Whitefish Falls watershed.
