Northeast Town Public Library launches its COVID-19 Chronicles project

LITTLE CURRENT – The Northeast Town Public Library is working to chronicle the community’s experience during this historically significant period, the COVID-19 pandemic.

Relevant public records related to COVID-19 will be chronicled, but the library is also seeking to preserve personal accounts and artistic expressions of individuals living in, or with ties to, the Town of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands during this challenging and unique time. Letters, essays, poetry, artwork, videos and other preservable records are welcome and requested.

“Documenting how hardships were coped with and blessings recognized as well as other displays of experience will serve future generations in ways that we may never understand,” said chief librarian and CEO Kathy Jo Berry. “The chronicles are not only a responsibility to the future, but a testament to the strength and resiliency of neighbours and individuals that can be appreciated during the lifetime of those who experienced it.”

Submissions can be made electronically or by mail. Please include name and contact information.

General biographical information is encouraged, but it is up to each individual how much they wish to share about themselves. Contributions can also be made anonymously. All ages are welcome to participate.

Please include a caption for photos or videos.

The following are some prompts that may be helpful: How have you celebrated special occasions during this time? How has your family, social group or workplace adapted to stay connected? What has surprised you about yourself or others? What have you learned to appreciate in a new way? Interview someone in your life about their experiences. What worried you? What brought you comfort? Is there a certain moment or event that stands out for you?

A reviewable copy will be kept in the local history reference section at the Northeast Town Public Library. The Centennial Museum of Sheguiandah has agreed to keep the originals in their collection.

Please send contributions to: NEMI Public Library, PO Box 790, Little Current, ON P0P 1K0 or by emailing them to nemilib@vianet.ca.
