SHEGUIANDAH FIRST NATION–The Manitoulin Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) will cooperate with the UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service to provide policing services to the Sheguiandah First Nation. This is an interim measure while the Sheguiandah First Nation Band considers their policing options.
As of Friday April 19, 2013 at 6 pm, the UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service will cease policing service within the Sheguiandah First Nation and the OPP will be responsible for providing policing services to that First Nations community.
Under the Police Services Act, the OPP is obligated to provide police services in all parts of the province that are not serviced by a municipal police service. The OPP and the UCCM Anishnaabe Police Service have a close working relationship and as in many times in the past each agency supports each other.
The OPP fully supports First Nations policing and the services it provides in First Nation communities throughout the province. The OPP shares the position that sustainable policing is essential to First Nations community safety and supports the provision of adequate resources to ensure effective policing options for First Nations communities. The OPP will continue to work with its First Nations policing partners to ensure community safety and to address First Nations policing priorities.
