M’CHIGEENG – The preparation is over and the Manitoulin Secondary School (MSS) Manitoulin Metal #6865 FIRST robotics team is now ready to take part in this year’s competitions.
“Our team is taking part in the FIRST Robotics FR Competition, a district event, at Georgian College, (this) weekend,” said MSS teacher and team coach/mentor Al Davy this past Sunday. “And then based on how well we do at the provincials later in the month, where there will be 27 teams, we could qualify to move on.”
Mr. Davy explained, “this year’s competition is sponsored by Disney Star Wars with the ‘First Rise Infinite Recharge’ theme. It’s a very interesting game this year; one component is basically teams have to launch balls—similar to dodge balls—into a high or low scoring portal, all using the robot.” The game also uses a teeter totter component to add to the challenge. Each team will compete against each other, as well as working with two other teams at times.
“We haven’t finalized our team roster yet, but we will be taking roughly 10 students, pretty much all new participants, who will be taking on various jobs,” said Mr. Davy.
This is the third year MSS will be taking part in this type of competition.
