MANITOULIN – The Manitoulin Snowdusters, in conjunction with Skate Canada Manitoulin, is hosting a snowmobile poker run this Saturday, February 15 with the chance at some great prizes sponsored by Island businesses.
Registration will begin on Saturday morning at the Little Current-Howland Recreation Centre from 9 to 10:30 am with the run getting underway at 10:30 am. Snowmobilers—who must have a trail permit—will be given a card where they will receive stamps at each of the run’s four stops: Paul’s Corner Store in M’Chigeeng, Mum’s Restaurant or the Grill and Chill in Mindemoya, Green Acres in Sheguiandah and Highway 6 Service Centre in Little Current. The stamps can be received in any order, says Snowdusters president Wayne Williamson.
There are two ways to get to Central Manitoulin from Little Current this year. Sledders can take the C107D trail from Little Current to the Green Bush and join the M3 trail at M’Chigeeng or they can take the C107D trail to Honora Bay, travel along Gaida’s Sideroad to Honora Bay and take an ice trail, which will have been picketed this week, to West Bay. Trails maps will be given out at registration.
“It’s roughly 100 kilometres,” Mr. Williamson adds.
The cost is $30 per person or $15 for snowmobilers under 16. The cost includes a delicious chili and a bun and sandwich dinner at the rec centre in Little Current, where the prizes will be distributed following the event. First prize is a custom fire pit courtesy of the Snowdusters from One KWE.
One day trail permits for $35 are available through ofsc.on.ca, but a minimum purchase of two days must be made.
The groomer will be heading out this week, just in time for the poker run, Mr. Williamson notes, adding that the picket lines on Bass Lake in Sheguiandah, Little Current to Killarney and from Little Current to Whitefish Falls are also in place. The picket lines from Honora Bay to West Bay will also be installed this week. Mr. Williamson advises snowmobilers that this year there will not be a picket line in to Spanish.
