MSS Kids in the Halls

It’s the second month of school! Yay! We have been at school for a month now. So we definitely now have no excuses to say that we are still in “summer mode.”

On Wednesday, September 18, Mr. Doane and 24 students travelled to the International Plowing Match and Rural Expo in Verner. This trip was a part of the Agriculture SHSM at MSS. Students not part of the Agriculture SHSM also got a chance to go on this trip. Students spent the day touring around the plowing match. They even got to see retired teacher Mr. Tom Scott participating in a lumberjack competition that he was pulled into! Mr. Doane said “it was a great day!”

A tractor joke for you:

Larry: Have you seen that new movie called ‘The Tractor?’

Phil: No, but I did see the trailer.

The MSS cross country team competed in their first meet of the season on Tuesday, September 24 at Laurentian University.

The MSS golf team competed at NOSSA on Thursday, September 26, at the Lively Golf Club. The team consists of Carter Abotossaway, Boston Thibault, Ben Marshall and Gabe Hare and coach Mr. Smith.

Also on September 26, MSS hosted its first home game of the year, with the new gym floor! The junior girls’ basketball team played the Espanola Spartans and won! Great job, girls!

Along with all the other exciting things going on at MSS on September 26, students took action to help the earth! The SHARE/Go Green committee held a bake sale in the cafeteria for the Amazon rainforest. All proceeds went to support Amazon Watch. Amazon Watch is a non-profit organization that helps protect the rainforest and advance the rights of Indigenous people in the Amazon basin.

As well, schools across the Rainbow District School Board (RDSB) participated in a “lights out and unplug” event during the last hour of the school day to show a commitment to a climate change action plan.

On Monday, September 30, staff and students in Rainbow Schools wore orange to show support for and to remember all of those affected by residential schools. Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake, British Columbia.

On Wednesday, October 9, five students from MSS will be travelling to Orillia to participate in the Ontario Education Leadership Centre (OELC) Rural Youth Leadership Retreat. Students will collaborate with other rural students in different workshops. The five students from MSS that will be participating are Ethan Theijsemijer, Rachael Orford, Laura Orford, Jocelyn Kuntsi and Katie Chapman.

A group of students will be participating in the Headstrong meeting at Collège Boréal in Sudbury, on Thursday, October 10. Headstrong is an anti-stigma initiative created by Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC) for youth aged 12-18. Headstrong was designed to inspire students to be brave, reach out and speak up about mental health.

Parent/teacher interviews will take place in the MSS gymnasium in the evening on Thursday, October 10.

The junior boys’ volleyball team has been announced. This year’s team will consist of Carter Moggy, Jared Cortes, Liam Bridgeman, Trent Bell, Riley Lockeyer, Julian Wemigwans, Jacob Wilson, Darwin Wood, Aiden McCarthy, Gabe Hare, Cord Hughson, Brett Mastelko, Steven White, Lucas Wright, Jordan Cooper, Jared Toope, Jack Penny and Luke Heinen. Good luck this season, boys!

MSS offers different opportunities for helping students thrive and specialize within the school environment. The ‘Living Well Locker’ has been helping students on a daily basis within the school environment, whether it is for a lunch, a bag of groceries or hygiene products. One of the other ways is through a ministry-approved program that allows Grade 11 and 12 students to focus their learning on a specific sector. The Agriculture SHSM and the Arts and Culture SHSM (Specialist High Skills Major), which are available at MSS, benefit students who want to focus on specific career related studies.

Joke of the week: Yesterday I saw a guy spill all his Scrabble letters on the road. I asked him, “What’s the word on the street?”

Upcoming events include the Headstrong meeting in Sudbury, OELC Leadership retreat, Parent/teacher interviews and much more!

Until next time, “Dream and Believe. Learn and Achieve!
