Manitoulin OPP urge public to lock vehicles

(LITTLE CURRENT, ON) – On Wednesday, June 5, 2019, members from the Manitoulin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) with the assistance of the United Chiefs and Councils of Manitoulin (UCCM) Anishnaabe Police, responded to one attempt theft of a vehicle and two reports of stolen vehicles.

A home owner in Mindemoya, Ontario, was awoken at approximately 2:30 a.m., to hear their Ram pick-up truck starting. The suspects fled the area. 

Sometime overnight on June 5, 2019, a GMC Sierra pick-up truck was stolen from a residence on Highway 540 in the Township of Northeastern Manitoulin and the Islands, Ontario. This vehicle was recovered on Manitowaning Road, in the Town of Little Current, Ontario.

A third vehicle, a Volkswagen Jetta, was stolen sometime overnight from a residence in the Town of Little Current, Ontario. This vehicle was recovered in Mindemoya, Ontario.

  • Don’t leave any valuables in your vehicle in plain view.
  • If you have to leave your vehicle on the street, lock it and park it in a well-lit area.
  • Engrave expensive accessories so that the thief will have difficulty disposing of them.
  • Keep your driver’s license and vehicle registration with you, in your wallet or purse.
  • Never leave your vehicle keys in plain view.
  • Lock your vehicle completely, close all windows when parked.

If you happen to be outside after dark and you see people in your neighbourhood acting suspiciously, please report it to police. Your neighbourhood may be a target for thefts from vehicles. 

 The investigation is continuing with the assistance of OPP Scenes of Crime Officers (SOCO). Any person with information regarding the person(s) responsible for these incidents should immediately contact the Ontario Provincial Police at 1-888-310-1122 or their nearest police authority.
