Island Elementary Soccer Championships!
The annual Manitoulin elementary soccer championships were to take place last Thursday. However, with the ominous rainfall warnings predicted for the tournament, the events were postponed to Wednesday morning. Organizers Deana Debassige from Pontiac and Bruce Lindsay (CMPS) made the right decision, but had to declare the Friday rain-day as a rain or shine event for the following day. As it turned out it was still a miserable day as it often is annually for this contest. High winds whipped up the drizzle into a horizontal waterfall that had half of all teams counting the seconds until half-time.
In Mindemoya, Central Manitoulin’s Bruce Lindsay was not only laying out the dimensions for two Junior fields over last weekend but was there early Friday morning refreshing his lime lines after Thursday’s deluge. After a competitive day, it was the C.C. McLean Colts who were the class of the division, taking the A trophy thanks in no small part to Coach Laura Hagman! Unfortunately, her talented team’s roster did not make before press time.
On the B side, the Little Current Coyotes took the trophy. Congratulations to: Sean Toope, Kian Corbiere, Kendall Boyter, McKenna Boyter, Julian Eadie, Ben Buzzell, Greyson Brewer-Case, Xavier Coleman, Georgia Roy, Shay-Lyn Secord, Ella Tasse, Rowan McGaughey and Coach Sherri Toope.
Meanwhile, on the Senior pitch at Pontiac School in Wiikwemkoong, organizer Deana Debassige, although not able to be there on the day, had everything covered with solid refs and facilitators. The Little Current side were once again, dominant and had five straight wins, in fact, they amassed 14 of 15 possible points in the single round-robin format. Their only fault was winning with one shoot-out instead of the other four, regulation victories.
The Coyotes featured: Brett Mastelko, Abrielle Mishibinijima, Morgan Green, Andrew Rose, Noah Volpini, Collin Lindner, Marcus Sanford, Davin Deschenes, Jared Toope, Jayden Hembruff-Rohn, T.J. Green, Cat Rose, Mackenzie Green, Saraya Eshkawkogan, Kate Chapman, Mckenna Barnes and Coach Mark Volpini.
NOSSA Mustang, gymnastics 2019 results
Over 110 high school gymnasts from northern Ontario gathered at the Gym Zone, Gymnastics Club in Sudbury on Monday, May 6 to compete in the annual NOSSA Championship. Five athletes from Manitoulin Secondary School also participated, and once again posted impressive results.
Here are their amazing, top ten results: In level 1, Mary Hore placed 4th on bars and 9th on floor, while Kyleigh Biedermann placed 6th on beam, 8th on vault, 10th on floor and 8th all-around.
In level 2, Sophie Hietkamp (in her first meet ever), placed 2nd on beam, 6th on vault, 7th on bars, 9th on floor, and 8th all-around. Hats off as well to Morgan Wall-Varey, who overcame injury to compete very well on the vault and beam.
In level 5, which had the strongest field of athletes ever represented at NOSSA, Mackenzie Cortes placed 4th on vault and 8th on beam.
“All of our athletes demonstrated wonderful resilience at this meet, overcoming injury and nerves, and really pulling things together,” said coach Jill Ferguson. “The girls surpassed our expectations, and we couldn’t be more proud of them.”
Unfortunately, due to decreasing numbers across the province, high school girls’ gymnastics can no longer host an OFSAA Festival or Championship. As a result, the NOSSA Championship was the last competition of the season.
The coaches (Jill Ferguson and Heather Theijsmeijer) were extremely grateful for all of Zoe Smith’s help as manager in keeping things organized and accessible during the meet and to all the Manitoulin parents who came out to cheer on the team.
Island runners rock, Sudbury Rocks!
Manitoulin runners have always made an impressive showing at the annual Sudbury Rocks race weekend. This year was no different with Island runners again making this their personal event. The Beaudry family of Wiikwemkoong for instance make an annual effort to celebrate Mothers’ Day weekend by having as many of their kin participating, possible.
Also from Wiikwemkoong, Aurel Fox-Recollet (son of Marcel and Hazel Fox-Recollet), was in the elite level as he finished in third place in the five kilometer version of the festival. Avery Sutherland from Birch Island was the first overall female and sixth overall! To put these amazing results in perspective there were over 500 runners in their 5km race!

Tracking the 21.1 km half marathon were: Stacey Haner, Shannon McGale, Iain McGale, Tammy Rolston, Steve Fessenden, Patrick Beaudry and Peter Finlay. Finally in the toughest, 42.2 km, full marathon congratulations to: Christian Kaiser-Fox!
