You always know when spring has sprung when they remove the ice from the arena and curling club. There are many rumours flying around the community concerning the future of our little arena. Central Manitoulin council is looking at many options to consider regarding both arenas in the municipality. They need to look at the feasibility of keeping the status quo with the arena in Mindemoya and here, but both require significant influx of money over the next couple of years to make that possible. They may decide to shut down one arena to try to save money to work towards building a new energy efficient multi-use complex. There is much research that needs to be done and discussions will be held before a final decision is made. Make sure that you speak to one of our councillors to ensure that your voice is heard.
Congratulations to Karlene Scott and the Scott family on being the proud highest bidders for the first litre of the 2019 Dewar Family Maple Syrup. Their winning bid of $1,000 will go to the Northern Cancer Foundation and will benefit many patients from our area. A huge shout-out to the Dewar Family for this amazing contribution that’s made every year. In turn, they would like to thank everyone who’s watched, bid or donated to make their annual auction such a huge success and a record year for donations. They send out special thanks to Adam and Angela McDonald who drove this auction to new heights that they never dreamed of. This is just another show of the amazing community spirit of giving on our island.
As the maple syrup season winds down, there are rumours that the smelt season is now beginning in our local waters. Keep your ears open for tales of where the big catches are. Good luck to all the fisher people out there. Just remember to be respectful, do not litter, cross private property, keep your light out of the water as much as possible and only use it to ensure proper footing so you don’t slip. Keep it a safe spring and do not drink and drive.

Pat Young will be celebrating her 80th birthday on April 17. Happy Birthday to her and get well wishes as she deals with some health issues.
The Providence Bay Community of Christ Church wants to remind us all of their services coming up for this Easter weekend. Good Friday at 7 pm they will hold a Service of Shadows with a hot cross bun social held afterwards. Easter Sunday at 10:30 am Community of Christ will have their ‘I Have Seen the Lord’ service. All are welcome to come and share in any or all of their services.
Earth Day is coming up on April 22. We would like to remind everyone on this day and every day to do what you can to ensure that we all do our part to keep the earth healthy. After all, we do not inherit the earth from previous generations; we borrow it from our children.
It is hard to think about summer when you look outside, especially after our recent snowfall last Sunday night that had the plows out again but it is coming. The Providence Bay Fair has announced the 2019 Fair Parade theme: Kids and Critters. So for all of you parade enthusiasts, get your thinking caps on and come up with some fantastic ideas for floats, for our parade. This years’ fair will be held August 16-18, 2019.
