GORE BAY—The Charles C. McLean Public School boys’ basketball team earned a silver medal at the Rainbow District School Board (RDSB) basketball championships held April 3 and 4 in Sudbury.
“Our C.C. McLean boys competed in the eight-team ‘C’ division at McLeod Public School against much larger schools than us,” said coach Dan Smith. “Because of our distance to travel, our boys had to play three full games, one hour apart, on April 3 to make it to the playoff round the following day.”
“Our team won the first game against Algonquin Public School 36-4,” said Mr. Smith. “We then played Copper Cliff school and won that game 36-18. In the final game of the night, we played a much closer game against Landsdowne Public School and won 32-29.”
On April 4, “our boys played in a very tough semi-final game against Levack Public School and won that match-up 36-26,” continued Mr. Smith. That win gave C.C. McLean a berth to the gold medal game and a rematch against Landsdowne. “After having to wait around for over three hours and losing three experienced players to the three-on-three hockey tournament in Little Current, the Landsdowne team proved to be better rested and very hungry to avenge their previous loss to us. They deservedly won the championship game.”
“As a result, our C.C. McLean boys took home the silver medal with a record of four wins and only one loss while scoring a total of 165 points in the five games,” said Mr. Smith. He added, “with over half the team returning to C.C. McLean next year, we’re hoping our basketball success continues for 2020.”
The C.C. McLean team roster included Caden McFarlane, Mason Leighton, Jamison McQuarrie, Lucas Wright, Hayden Lloyd, coach Dan Smith, Jayden Hayden, Kaleb Austin, Malachi Joseph, Hugh McLaughlin, Ryder Lockyer and Avery Nodecker.
