Providence Bay News & Notes

We did not have the official results for the men’s annual bonspiel that took place last weekend in time for last week’s column, so as promised here they are. Winners of the McAllister Memorial Trophy First Event: Jack White’s team of Prov Bay won against Ken Ramsay’s team, also of Prov Bay. Second Event: Jack Ferguson’s team from Little Current beat out Lew Lanktree’s team from Mindemoya and the Third Event was won by Gord Gilpin’s team out of Sudbury who defeated Bob Caddle’s Prov Bay team. Congratulations to all team players and we hope to see you again next year.

On February 7 students from Sheshegwaning’s S.J. Anishnabeck School and Gore Bay’s C.C. McLean arrived on Prov’s shoreline for the last of the outdoor days of 4elements’ Walking Waters project. Their day began around a sacred fire prepared by Lymon with smudging with elder Verna before they headed out on their snowshoes onto the windblown sparkling and frozen winter waters toward the marina. Enjoying the sight and feel of both the large ice floes and small crystalline chunks formed a memorable day for each learner before they returned along the boardwalk to warm up in our community centre with hot chocolate and their lunches. Afterward there was time to listen to Selba and to sing the traditional songs that will be presented at their culminating activity in Sheshegwaning on March 22 (which is World Water Day) and to complete their artistic recollections of their day in their art journals. Miigwetch to Lauren Satok of 4elements for her planning of this important project. The video of the day will be posted shortly on 4elements.

Last week was exceptionally busy in our community with the school break on with lots of parents, kids and friends coming to town to visit and enjoy the scenery. We heard stories of some people coming for the week to visit their cottages and friends and having to snowshoe in. What a winter it’s been.

We’ve heard of many people out tapping trees already and collecting sap. Goes to show you that Mother Nature doesn’t wait, when its time its time.

Was it a green St. Patrick’s Day weekend for you? Saint Patrick’s Day, or the Feast of Saint Patrick, is a cultural and religious celebration held on March 17, the traditional death date of Saint Patrick, the foremost patron saint of Ireland. St Patrick’s Day is a public holiday in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador on the nearest Monday to March 17 each year. I think we should all call our MPs to put forth a motion for Ontario. J

Tom Rowan will do the same thing he has done that day for the past 56 years: He’ll make the Chicago River run green.

Rowan, a 75-year-old retired police officer, is the man behind the famous Windy City ritual. The city’s St. Patrick’s Day parade is world-renowned, primarily because of its unique tradition of dyeing the river green.

“The original Mayor Daley in the 1950s wanted to do something special, he wanted to dye the whole of Lake Michigan green. But it was just too huge to do. The next best thing was the Chicago River,” Mr. Rowan told CNN.

Our condolences go out to Debbie (nee Smith-Hebert) and David White for the loss of their son Brian. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all their family and friends. We are all thinking of you and wishing you peace and comfort.
