Island students win big at Legion public speaking competition

ESPANOLA—Four Manitoulin Island students took first place in their respective divisions at the Royal Canadian Legion (RCL) Zone H-3 Public Speaking competition held at the Espanola (RCL) branch this past Sunday.

Amber Brizuela from Central Manitoulin Public School (CMPS) won the primary division (Grade 1-3) with her speech on Perry’s Cooking Mishaps. She was representing the RCL Branch 177 Little Current. 

Amara Wilson-Zegil, a Charles C. McLean Public School student (Gore Bay, representing RCL Branch 514), won the Junior division Grade 4-6 with her speech on 1960s Batman.

Also from C.C. McLean, Mason Leighton won the Intermediate division, Grade 7-9, with his speech on Money.

And not to be outdone, April Torkopoulos of Manitoulin Secondary School (MSS) (RCL Branch 514) won the Senior division, Grade 10-12, with her speech on the cost of post secondary education. 

These four students will now be moving on to the District competition in Magnetawan on Sunday, March 24.
