Peter and Janet Fathers have returned from a three-week holiday in Portugal. They stayed in the Algarve on the southern coast. They took the train almost every day to a different town where they would then walk three or four miles to a smaller village. There they would visit castles, churches, shops, beaches and have a wonderful Portuguese meal. The weather was sunny, the people friendly, the fresh fruits, vegetables and seafood were delicious, and everything was very affordable.
Portugal is known for their storks. They nest on the highest peaks they can find, for example, the tip of a cross atop a church, the tallest hydro pole, etcetera. The hostel that the Fathers stayed in was called The Stork and these birds nested just outside their window. When they were on the outdoor terrace they could almost make eye contact! Like in Canada, children are told that storks bring new babies.
Don and Anna Orford and their granddaughter Laura Orford have just returned from a one week trip to Cayo Coco, Cuba. They stayed at Memories Flamenco Beach Resort. Laura enjoyed snorkeling on the coral reef.
A reminder going out to any interested quilters that the Twilight Seniors Club hosts a quilting social every Friday from 9 am until your fingers get tired. A lunch is provided to participants. This is in the basement of the community hall.
The annual ladies’ curling bonspiel was held February 15-17 and was a successful weekend again. Many teams were out and dressed in outfits from the 60s all weekend and performing entertaining skits for each other on Saturday night’s social after enjoying a delicious meal. Of course, the curling was the reason for everyone coming out and the results are as follows: 1st Event Winners were Sherry Forest, Nancy Head, Sue Whynott, Laurie Wright, 1st Event Runners Up were Beth Bond McCulligh, Cathy Case, Margo Bickell, Beth Dykalski. The 2nd Event Winners were Bev McDermid, Angela Johnston, Patti Jo Woods, Leslie McDermid with Runners Up Ellen Holroyd, Jary White, Judy McKenzie, Linda Gray. The 3rd Event Winners were Leila Thureson, Lenora Tann, Sharon Stephens, Ann Runnalls and the Runners Up of that Event were Mary Lea Buchan, Carolyn Dearing, Lisa White. As usual, a good time was had by all.
There is no more steam seen rising from the bay on cold days so we assume that it has frozen over. We wouldn’t advise going out on it though as it doesn’t look very safe. It still looks like a frozen slushy. You can still see steam rising out over the open water further out.
Snowmobiles are out enjoying the trails with lots of snow this season. The OFSC trail that is groomed by the Manitoulin Snowdusters Club goes right through our charming village. Make sure to stop in at Huron Sands’ newly renovated and under new management restaurant to warm up, have a beverage and enjoy a hot meal.
The Community of Christ Church had their Annual Crokinole Tournament on Sunday, February 24. We regret we weren’t able to inform you about it in advance but hopefully local advertising brought out a good crowd.
Elliot Lake resident Sherry Anderson-McFarlane, formerly of Providence Bay is continuing to undergo medical treatment and had surgery again on February 25. We wish her a speedy recovery. Her birthday will be coming up March 5 so best wishes for a wonderful day despite the challenges that she faces daily.
The Community of Christ Church will be holding their Annual Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper on Tuesday, March 5. It begins at 5:30 pm. There is no charge but they are asking for a free will offering.
Any students who are interested in working in our community for the 2019 summer season have until Friday March 8 at 4:30 pm to make an application. The Township of Central Manitoulin is looking for a Summer Fun Program Leader (college or university student preferred) and an assistant for an eight-week term. They are also looking for Interpretive Centre hosts for a 10-week term (preference will be given to college or university students). There are also other positions available to students within the township. More information can be found on Central Manitoulin’s webpage under ‘administration’ and then under ‘employment’ or in the help wanted section of this newspaper.
