Second semester has begun! Students are getting used to a new class schedule, new teachers, and new classmates.
Before second semester began on Tuesday, February 5, there was a short week of exams. Multiple snow days on Friday, January 25, Monday, January 28 and Wednesday, January 30 that caused exams to be bumped by a few days. The schedule wrapped up on Thursday, January 31 with exams being written in both the morning and afternoon. Finally, there was a scheduled P.D. Day on Friday, February 1, which went off without a hitch, and another day of no school on Monday due to the freezing rain.
Now for your annual Wiarton Willie Groundhog Day report: On February 2, Wiarton Willie was coaxed out of his cozy home to find out if there would be an early spring or six more weeks of winter. After not seeing his shadow, Wiarton Willie determined that there would be an early spring. Now, do we believe a groundhog or the weather channel?

There were no sporting events during the last few weeks due to exams. All sports started back up this week. The boys’ hockey team played their final game of the regular season against Lockerby at 7 pm on Monday, February 4. The boys closed out the regular season very well and made MSS proud. Great job, boys!
The girls’ hockey team played a home game against Espanola in M’Chigeeng at 5 pm on Tuesday, February 5. Thank you to everyone that came out to support the Mustangs!
Manitoulin Secondary School is hosting its annual Grade 8 information night on Thursday, February 7 at 6:30 pm. All Grade 8 students and parents are welcome to attend!
Just under two weeks from now MSS will be putting on the production of ‘The Mikado’ from February 14 to February 16. Mark the dates on your calendar! Tickets for ‘The Mikado’ are available at the I.D.A. in Gore Bay, Guardian Pharmacies in Little Current, Mindemoya and Manitowaning as well as at the door. Tickets are $16 for adults and $10 for children 13 and under.
‘The Mikado’ is set in a fictional Japanese town where flirting has been made a capital offense. ‘The Mikado’ tells the story of Nanki-Poo, a wandering minstrel, who falls for Yum-Yum, a young maiden who is betrothed to Ko-Ko, a cheap tailor.
There has been some changes to the cast list since the original casting. The updated cast of ‘The Mikado’ includes Katie Chapman as The Mikado, Rachael Orford as Sa-Shimi the Narrator, Nick Harper as Nanki-Poo, Ethan Theijsmeijer as Ko-Ko, Dana Thomson as Pooh-Bah, Larissa Chevrette as Pish-Tush, April Torkopoulos as Yum-Yum, Lauren Goddard as Pitti-Sing, Natalia Bell as Peep-Bo, and Abbie Harper as Katisha, Alexandria Lewis as Tee-Do, Trish Patterson as Do-Ray, Monica Zilio as Soo-Zuki, Myah Emerson as Ban-Jo, Jocelyn Kuntsi as Soo-Shi, and Alex Joshua-Mathews as Sun-Nee. Various Minstrels, Vagabonds, Nobles and Assistants include: Jordan Goddard, Jack Young, Cameron Meewasige and Marissa McGraw-Hill.
