OPP seize loaded firearm during impaired driving check

ESPANOLA—Three individuals, including one from Manitoulin, have been arrested and charged with numerous drug and weapons charges, while a loaded firearm was also seized during a Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (R.I.D.E.) check last Saturday.

On Saturday, January 27, officers from the Manitoulin detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were conducting R.I.D.E. checks on Highway 17 in Baldwin Township.

At approximately 1:13 am, officers checked a vehicle and conducted an investigation. Officers seized suspected cocaine, a suspected hand gun and a large amount of Canadian currency totaling approximately $8,400.

As a result, three individuals were arrested and charged with numerous drug and weapons charges.

An 18-year-old with no fixed address has been charged with: unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted firearm, contrary to section 91(1) of the Criminal Code (CC); carry firearm, weapon, prohibited device or ammunition in a careless manner, contrary to section 86(1) of the CC; possession of firearm or ammunition contrary to prohibition order (youth), contrary to section 117.01(1) of the CC; possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm, contrary to section 95(a) of the CC; carrying concealed weapon, contrary to section 90 of the CC; possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the CC; possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose, contrary to section 88 of the CC; and possession of a Schedule 1 substance for the purpose of trafficking, contrary to section 5(2) of the controlled drugs and substances act (CDSA).

A 27-year-old female from Sagamok First Nation has been charged with: unauthorized possession of a firearm, contrary to section 91(1) of the CC; knowledge of unauthorized possession of firearm, contrary to section 92(1) of the CC; possession of loaded prohibited or restricted firearm, contrary to section 95(a) of the CC; occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm, contrary to section 94 of the CC; possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, contrary to section 354(1)(a) of the CC; and possession of a Schedule 1 substance—cocaine, contrary to section 4(1) of the CDSA.

A 28-year-old male from Wiikwemkoong First Nation has been charged with: unauthorized possession of a firearm, contrary to section 91(1) of the CC; knowledge of unauthorized possession of firearm, contrary to section 92(1) of the CC; possession of a loaded prohibited or restricted firearm, contrary to section 95(a) of the CC; occupant of a motor vehicle knowing there was a firearm, contrary to section 94 of the CC; possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, contrary to section 354(1)(A) of the CC; possession of a schedule 1 substance-cocaine, contrary to section 4(1) of the CDSA; and drive motor vehicle, no currently validated permit, contrary to section 7(1)(a) of the Highway Traffic Act.

The accused were held in custody and were scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Sudbury on January 28, 2019.
