Island family makes Ronald McDonald house donation

GORE BAY–The family of Herb and Carmen Walker have once again made their annual Christmas donation, this year to the Ronald McDonald House in Toronto.

This family tradition began 10 years ago in lieu of exchanging gifts between siblings. Carmen contributes as well. The 2018 donation of $1,200 to Ronald McDonald House (RMH) in Toronto is particularly special as RMH provided excellent care and service to members of the Walker family for a large part of 2018.

Nate Walker, son of Jenn and Kris Walker, was born at Mount Sinai Hospital on January 26. He was being monitored for heart concerns, which cleared up. However, it was discovered he had an immune deficiency and required a bone marrow transplant. Fortunately, his brother Nash was a 100 percent match donor.

RMH  became Nate and his mother’s home away from home as he did not get to return to his family home until August 24. RMH was outstanding in helping the whole family with accommodations, food, treats, special family days, medical education and just having family fun. Brothers Nikson, age 4; Nash, age 2; and dad Kris could visit, attend special events and bond with other families staying there. RMH proved to be a lifesaver in supporting this family and others through a very stressful and trying time.

Nate’s family, grandparents Ron and Erin Walker, great-grandmother Carmen Walker plus so many others are grateful for this facility that assists all family members in coping with the stress of their situation. Nate continues to be monitored during visits to Sick Kids and is happy to be home playing with his brothers.
