We are almost halfway through the semester and the first report cards will be handed out soon. But in the meantime, students are very busy will lots of different sports, clubs and events.
On Tuesday, October 30, the MSS girls’ hockey team played Espanola. The girls played very well and won 5-1. Keep it up, Mustangs!
Also on Tuesday, October 30 there was a pumpkin carving contest in the cafeteria at lunch. Many pumpkins were turned into creative looking jack-o-lanterns by the end of lunch.
Students at MSS got in to the Hallowe’en spirit on Wednesday by dressing up in costumes or wearing black and orange. Many different costumes could be seen throughout the halls. Prizes were given out to the scariest, funniest and best overall costume. One of the most popular costumes of the day at MSS was Mr. Tallman’s fairy princess!
On Wednesday, October 31, many students went out trick-or-treating for non-perishable items for the WE Scare Hunger campaign. Almost 1,300 items were collected for the Manitoulin Food Bank and the Living Well Locker at MSS. Thank you to everyone that contributed.
On Thursday, November 1, MSS girls’ basketball hosted the Elliot Lake Atoms. Both the senior and junior girls played well. The junior girls won their game 31-20. Great job, girls!
On Friday, November 2, there were meetings for anyone interested in playing senior girls volleyball and senior boys basketball.
This year’s production of ‘The Mikado’ had its first practice on Monday, November 5. The cast list was finalized and posted on October 31. The cast list includes: Dana Thomson as The Mikado/Ken-do, Pierre Debassige as the Narrator/Ban-Jo, Nick Harper as Nanki-Poo, Ethan Theijsmeijer as Ko-Ko, Emily Savage as Pooh-Bah, Larissa Chevrette as Pish-Tush, April Torkopoulos as Yum-Yum, Lauren Goddard as Pitti-Sing, Natalia Bell as Peep-Bo and Abbie Harper as Katisha. The Chorus/Swing includes: Grant King as Go-To, Alexandria Lewis as Tee-Do, Trish Patterson as Do-Ray, Aryanna Recollet-P as Mee-Fah, Monica Zilio as Soo-zuki, Rachael Orford as Sa-Shimi, Katie Chapman as So-Lah, Jocelyn Kuntsi as Soo-Shi and Alex Joshua-Mathews as Sun-nee. Various minstrels, vagabonds, nobles and assistants include: Jordan Goddard, Jack Young, Cameron Meewasige, and Marissa McGraw-Hill. Congratulations to everyone!
The annual November feast/potluck for all students and staff was on Monday, November 5. The Three Fires Confederacy hosted the feast/potluck in recognition of Treaty Week.
Tomorrow, November 8, MSS is having a Remembrance Day service during second period. The MSS Vocal Group will be performing.
On Monday, November 12 at 10:20 am a representative from Laurentian University will be at MSS. If you are interested in attending, please sign the list that will be in the guidance office. For more information go to www.ouf.ca.
There will be Christmas Craft Show on Friday, November 16 from 7 to 9 pm and Saturday, November 17 from 10 am to 3 pm at MSS. There will be over 25 local vendors, plus school groups and teams displaying their wares.
The Agriculture SHSM (Specialist High Skills Major) is new to MSS and is looking for students that are interested in this particular sector. This program gives students an opportunity to specialize, gain qualifications and plan a career pathway in various areas of the agriculture sector while still in high school. If you are interested, speak with Mr. Becks, Mr. Harfield or Mrs. McCann.
If you are currently in your last year of high school and plan to apply to a college or university, the TD Bank has a Scholarship for Community Leaders that offers up to four years of paid tuition.
