Last week (October 15-19) was National Waste Reduction Week. Mustangs made sure that they kept their garbage to a minimum, that included using a reusable water bottle, having a litterless lunch and more!
On Wednesday, October 17, a warm bowl of soup was available in Mrs. McCann’s room at lunch. Many students enjoyed the soup as their lunch that day!
Also on Wednesday, October 17, MSS held a boys’ volleyball tournament. Four schools were in attendance, Espanola High School, W.C. Eaket Secondary School, E.S.C. Jeunesse Nord and MSS. Both the junior and senior boys’ teams played very well in all four games that they played during the day! Great job, Mustangs!
A boys’ hockey meeting was held at lunch on Wednesday.
On Thursday, October 18 both junior and senior girls’ basketball teams were in action at MSS. Both the junior and senior girls play against the Espanola High School Spartans. The senior girls played a great game, but lost. The junior girls played an aggressive game against the Spartans, but lost 30-22.
Also on Thursday, October 18, the Dark Horse Cafe (open mic) was open in the music room at lunch.
On Friday, October 19 there was a robotics meeting at lunch. The focus of that meeting was learning how to connect wires. The 2018-2019 Manitoulin Metal Robotics Team includes: Kassandra Bordeleau, Jake Brasil, Pierre Debassige, Myah Emerson, Ryan Goddard, JD Herlehy, Samuel Hill, Nathan Janoki, Kaitlyn Keatley, Damien Merrylees, Cameron Osawabine-Corbiere, Douglas Robinson, Emily Savage, Avery Sheppard, Lindsay Sheppard, Zoe Smith, Dana Thompson, Drake Trudeau, Amber Wahl, Julian Wemigwans, Darwin Wood, Lavitz Young, Mr. Davy (lead mentor) and Ms. Bauer (mentor). New members are welcome!
From Monday, October 22 to today, October 24, auditions for the musical ‘The Mikado’ have been taking place for high school students. Auditions for elementary school students are on Saturday, October 27. Also needed are people that would be interested in being techies, making costumes, doing hair/makeup, marketing, etc. Speak to Mrs. Bauer, Mr. Zegil or Mr. Theijsmeijer if you are interested.
Yesterday, Tuesday, October 23, there was another girls’ hockey tryout.
On Thursday, October 25, a representative from Algoma University will be at MSS at 1:40 pm. If you are interested in attending, please sign the list that will be in the guidance office. For more information go to www.ouf.ca.
Friday, October 26 is a P.D. Day! There is no school for students.
Just a reminder that there is crossfit on Wednesdays after school. If you are interested in participating all you have to do is show up, nothing else.
SHARE/Go Green is getting ready for the annual WE Scare Hunger event. On Halloween night, MSS students will be going around collecting non-perishable items in communities across the Island instead of trick or treating. The non-perishable items will be given to the living well locker at MSS and the Manitoulin Food Bank. Any MSS student can participate. Sign up forms are available.
Senior peer tutors are need for math and English! Volunteer hours can be obtained by being a peer tutor as well as the joy of helping someone! Sign up in the guidance office.
If you are currently in your last year of high school and plan to apply to a college or university, the TD Bank has a Scholarship for Community Leaders that offers up to four years of paid tuition. Joke of the week for all you Hallowe’en lovers and hunters: Why did the game warden arrest the ghost? Because he didn’t have a haunting licence!
