Updated – Sagamok man has drowned in North Channel

NORTH CHANNEL–Yesterday, October 5, police received a report that two men had capsized off of Landry Point near the Sagamok First Nation on the North Shore. According to Sergeant Jean Marc St. Jacques of the Espanola detachment of the OPP, the men had been checking fishing nets when swells threw them from a 16-foot aluminum boat.

One of the men, from Sagamok, was able to swim to shore where he called for help. Sergeant St. Jacques reported that he tried to rescue his friend, but failed in his attempts.

OPP and Anishinabek Police are continuing the search, with the SAVE team from North Bay, the OPP underwater dive team, CFB Trenton’s search and rescue unit and the coast guard all assisting. The OPP vessel stationed in Little Current is also part of the search, however it is crewed by members of Espanola detachment.

“OPP are nearing recovery mode,” Sgt. St. Jacques said, noting that so much time has passed that the investigation will soon turn from rescue to recovery. “He is presumed drowned.”

At approximately 6pm today, October 6th a Sagamok man’s body was recovered from the North Channel.
