Air Quality Alert: Espanola – Killarney

Statements

6:00 AM EDT Monday 30 July 2018
Special air quality statement in effect for:

  • Espanola – Killarney

Smoke from a large forest fire west of Key River is causing locally poor air quality and reduced visibilities. The smoke is blowing northeastward across Highway 69 affecting areas near Grundy Lake Provincial Park towards Lake Nipissing. Smoke may also affect air quality in the North Bay area.

Visibilities are expected to be poor in some areas early this morning as the smoke helps the formation of fog, or smog. Conditions will rapidly improve later this morning as the airmass becomes better mixed.

These higher pollution levels are expected to persist today and possibly the next few days.

Winds are forecast to become light tonight and possibly easterly or northeasterly by Tuesday resulting in a shifting of the areas affected.

Individuals may experience symptoms such as increased coughing, throat irritation, headaches or shortness of breath. Children, seniors, and those with cardiovascular or lung disease, such as asthma, are especially at risk.

Be air aware! Check your local weather forecasts and alerts so you know when to take extra care.

Visit www.airhealth.ca for information on how to reduce your health risk and your personal contribution to pollution levels, as well as for current and forecast AQHI values.
