KAGAWONG—Ten years and counting, the Old Mill Heritage Museum continues to display exhibits depicting life in Kagawong from yesteryear.
Dianne Fraser and members of the museum board, along with curator Rick Nelson, have outdone themselves once again. This year’s exhibits include a blacksmith shop, a birth, marriage and death registry and a ‘School Days’ display in the adjacent Post Office Museum.
Visitors will also be able to step inside the walking trail map and then go for a tour through the township as they explore the former site of the school, lumber mill, company store and post office among many others. The buildings, map and text were drawn and written by Jenna Carter.
Life in Kagawong depicting life on the land, in the home and on the water are one of the regular exhibits at the museum.
“The blacksmith shop display exceeded my expectations,” shared Mr. Nelson. “I didn’t know how Brad (Mackay) was going to pull it off, but he did.”
This impressive exhibit is a must see. The dirt floor, ash and bellows which were donated by the Gordon family add to the authenticity of the shop.
Ms. Fraser commented that she is also pleased with how it turned out. Her passion and dedication to the museum, among other community involvement, earned her the title of Senior of the Year earlier this month.
Mark your calendar for Thursday, August 9 as this year’s matinee and evening History Day presentations will feature the story of the Henry Brothers and the birth of Kagawong and part two: the 80th anniversary of the Daniel Dodge tragedy.
The Old Mill Heritage Museum is open seven days a week from 10 am to 4 pm during July and August. Mr. Nelson and summer student Miranda Mackay will be happy to take you on a tour. Donations are welcome.
