Providence Bay News & Notes

Brigid McAndry had a surprise when she opened her curtains last Wednesday morning and saw a black bear running down the driveway and across McDermid Drive. It was in too much of a hurry to stop for a picture. Another bear, or possibly the same one, was also spotted on the Sand Road. Generally, bears want to avoid humans. Most encounters are not aggressive, and attacks are rare. If you do fear for your safety or a bear enters a school yard when school is in session, enters or tries to enter a residence, wanders into a public gathering, kills livestock and lingers around the site or if they stalk people and linger at the site then the MNR recommends that you call 911. You can call the Bear Wise reporting line at 1-866-514-2327 for any non-emergency nuisance bears. It’s always a good idea to prevent bear to human encounters by removing bear attractants from your home and yard.
