MSS gymnastics team wins bronze at NOSSA

M’CHIGEENG—The Manitoulin Secondary School (MSS) Mustangs girls gymnastics team took third place overall at the Northern Ontario Secondary School Association (NOSSA) championships held in Sudbury last Friday, and in the process two members of the team have qualified for the provincial championships.

The MSS Girls gymnastics team competed at the NOSSA gymnastics championship in Sudbury on Friday, April 13. They represented Manitoulin with pride and grit, holding their own when faced with steep competition from 10 schools across the region.

Newly-crowned NOSSA champion Summer Beaudin took the gold in Level 2 vault, qualifying her for the Ontario Federation of Secondary Athletic Association Gymnastics Festival to be held April 22-24 in Sudbury. Joining her at OFSAA will be level 4 athlete Mackenzie Cortes, who placed third on vault, bars and beam, sixth on floor (qualifying her in all four events) and fourth all-around in Level 4. Her strong results allowed Manitoulin to place third overall for the Level 4 Team Award.

As a rookie, Anna Migwans rose to the occasion in Level 1, competing well against over 35 other gymnasts.

Coaches Jill Ferguson and Heather Theijsmeijer are extremely proud of the small-but-mighty MSS squad this year, and look forward to building on everyone’s successes at OFSAA and next year.
