April showers bring May flowers and a very busy spring. The Spring Formal/Grad Dance theme has been decided: Masquerade. The dance is planned for Friday, May 25 from 7-11 pm. On April 3, there was an assembly to get the student body pumped up for Spymaster. The annual school-wide game of tag will be starting up on April 12. Students will have the opportunity to sign up from April 4-6, and entry into the game is $2.
The SHARE/Go Green group is doing their annual Vesey’s sales. Community members will be able to order bulbs, just in time for the start of gardening season from SHARE members. Many options varying from tomatoes and strawberries to dahlias and lilies are available for the 5A planting zone. The proceeds from this fundraiser will go towards the Brick by Brick campaign to fund a school in Tanzania. The group is also planning an E-Waste and battery drive in June. More details will follow.
From March 29-31 the Manitoulin Metal Robotics Team was at Nipissing University in North Bay at their final First PowerUp competition of the year. The team had been working hard to make sure that their robot Willis was prepared for the tournament. On Wednesday, March 28, the team had a productive practice to test their newest features: an upgraded conveyor belt and a crossing arm. The team prepped all of their equipment and trained their newest members, Carissa Holliday and Pierre Debassige. Pierre participated in the opening ceremony at the event. Following competition on Friday, all participants and mentors attended a social, where they ate poutine, celebrated the event with other teams, and relaxed after a hard day of competition.
The Artastic Fusion group has begun their theme contest for this year. The themes for this contest are Dessertopia, Adorable Insects, Steampunk and Twisted Fairytales. Submissions can be in any medium, and must be submitted by May 14.
The Living Well Locker has been helping many students thrive in the school environment. The Living Well Locker is a food bank for MSS students to get non-perishable food and hygiene products. In March, over 20 students were able to get support from the Locker. All students are encouraged to regularly contribute a non-perishable food items, including high need items such as pastas and soups.
The Italy trip was successful, and Ms. McCann is already starting sign-ups for the next International trip. The trip in 2020 will be to the British Isles. Students will have the opportunity to go to Ireland, Scotland and England to explore the many sights and historic monuments. Students who sign-up before March 31 will have $200 taken off of their final price.
The OSSLT Literacy Test will be on Tuesday, April 10. There will be tutorials available on April 4 and 9 for any test-writing student who wishes to get some extra preparation. Even though it doesn’t quite feel like spring yet, MSS activities and events say otherwise. ‘Til next time, stay golden, Mustangs.
