Alexandra Horowitz runs a Dog Cognition Lab at Barnard College in New York City. Her bestselling book, ‘Inside of a Dog’ examined and explained what dogs know in great detail. In her newest book, ‘Being a Dog: Following the Dog into a World of Smell’ unravels the puzzle of a dog’s scent ability. This book allows the reader to tag along as a dog sniffs and wanders in the world––nose to the ground and to the air. It is a remarkable look at the complexity of “man’s best friend” and how they live and function with countless odours, scents, fragrances, stenches and aromas––a world of smells––a world we know so little about. You may never look at a dog’s nose the same again!

“Don’t touch that!” Famous words from parents to their children. Our world is bristling and permeated with microbes. We all have an early-age instilled and ingrained fear of germs. Author Nicholas Bakalar disperses some of the myths and mysteries that surround the lowly germ in his book, ‘Where the Germs Are: A Scientific Safari.’ This book will reshape what you think you know in a well-researched, humourous and engaging way.

“One day I will run. One day they won’t hurt me anymore.”  Poignant words from Canadian author Joseph Boyden’s book, ‘Wenjack.’ This is a powerful book that touchingly documents the journey of a young Ojibwe Residential School runaway who is desperate to escape the pain and misery of that institution. The story is of his arduous trek to reach his family and home.

Sussex author Ruth Ware’s book, ‘The Woman in Cabin 10’ is set on a very deluxe ship cruise. Travel writer, Lo Blacklock is along for the ride to do a feature about the ship’s maiden trip. The assignment sounds great––until a splash is heard in the middle of the night––something is definitely not right, especially when all crew and passengers are accounted for. The question is, then, who was the woman that Lo saw disappear beneath the waves in the rough seas? Ware’s twists and turns will keep you in suspense and guessing.
