WIKWEMIKONG—The Community members of the Wikwemikong Unceded Indian Reserve are proud descendants of the Anishinabek Warriors that fought in the War of 1812. One of these warriors was Mookomaanish. He was awarded a sword by the British Crown for his contributions to the War Effort. Mookomaanish is the ancestor of Wikwemikong’s Kinoshameg families.
This sword is currently on display at the Canadian War Museum. They have kindly agreed to remove it from the display and accompany it to Wikwemikong for public viewing on September 20, 2012.
The event will feature the unveiling of a portrait of Mookomaanish as well as a display of local artifacts linked to this era.
The public is being encouraged to take this opportunity to learn about our people’s contributions to this pivotal time; the formation of Canada through the War of 1812.
The public is invited to the Wikwemikong Recreational Complex on Thursday, September 20, 2012 from 5 pm to 8 pm to participate and learn about the Sword of Mookomaanish and the Anishinabek’s involvement in the War of 1812.
