March Break is over and the halls at MSS are full of students getting back into the swing of the semester. Parents’ night is taking place on March 22, giving parents a chance to see how their kids are doing in Semester 2 so far.

Students’ Council has been busy organizing many fun activities and spirit days for future and current Mustangs. March 9 was a half day movie. There were half hour periods in the morning, and then Thor: Ragnarok was shown in the cafeteria. Free popcorn and hot chocolate were handed out to students and staff as people bid their friends best wishes for the March Break.

On March 21 and 22 Students’ Council Executive will be travelling to each of the elementary schools’ Grade 8 classes to talk about their future at MSS, as well as the Grade 8 Shadow Day. Grade 8s will be invited to MSS in the Spring to shadow a senior student for a period, get to know some of their future peers, and get a feel for how the school day works. The Council is hard at work making sure the shadow day will be an easy event for all the students involved. On March 28, there is a wacky hair day planned so students can let their locks loose and laugh with their friends.

Ms. McGraw and the Three Fires Confederacy are organizing the annual powwow to take place on April 27. The hope is that each team and club in the school will have representatives walking in during the Grand Entry. All of the elementary schools will be invited to join the MSS students and community members at the ceremony.

SHARE/Go Green has a full spring ahead of them. The group is starting their annual Vesey’s fundraiser. Students will be going around their communities selling flower bulbs for gardeners to plant this spring. There will also be a We Bake for Change fundraiser to raise money for the Brick by Brick campaign. As a special feature to the traditional bake sale, community members will be able to pre-order their sweets through social media so they can just come pick up their baking and have it ready to go right away.

SHARE/Go-Green will be conducting a waste and electricity audit to try and uphold their gold EcoSchools classification from last year. The goal is to limit the waste at MSS, as well as saving electricity. For Earth Day festivities in Kagawong, SHARE is making a video focused on how the students at MSS feel about protecting our environment and how students help the Earth.

WE Day X is coming to Manitoulin on May 11. The student-run event will be focused around fighting poverty on a local and global scale. Inspired by the WE Movement, WE Day Manitoulin will showcase musicians, speakers, and world changers to empower Grade 7-12 students from schools across the Rainbow District School Board and Manitoulin to make a difference by making positive changes in their community.

After a week-long break, clubs at MSS are busy organizing events, spirit days, and taking care of the environment. ‘Til next time, stay golden, Mustangs.
