Basketball champions!
The Island elementary basketball championships took place this past Tuesday in M’Chigeeng at Lakeview for the boys’ and in Little Current at LCPS for the girls’ division. In the girls’ event the home-court team had a great day and defeated the defending champion CMPS Eagles in their first game of the day that eventually turned out to be the deciding game as they both went on to be undefeated in their forthcoming matches. Kudos to coaches Kelsey Leclair and Kait Smith as well as players: Savannah Crack, Noelle Noakwegijig, Whittier Dwyer- Gauthier, Dakota Mishibinijima, Katie Chapman, Brie Rose, Guadalupe Anaya, Jorjia Peltier, Autumn Deschenes and Cat Rose. Many thanks to volunteer referees Maria Diebolt and Ashley Jewell who were both excellent Manitoulin basketball players when they played, seemingly, just a short while ago.
At Lakeview, the home-court squad was undefeated through their first, four of five games as was Mindemoya. The tournament, a single round-robin format, coincidentally had Lakeview and CMPS scheduled to meet in the final game that just happened to be the deciding match. Lakeview jumped out to an early lead but the Eagles played steady to eventually take the title. Manitoulin Minor Spotlight!
The M’Chigeeng Atom team capped a remarkable season last Monday downing the Gore Bay Bruins, to capture the Island A Championship. Even though the team lost their first game of the season, way back in November, to the Bruins the Thunderbirds finished strong, with a 25 game win-streak, under head coach Bert Panamick.
In the finals, the first three minutes of game 1 found the team down 5 –0 as Gore Bay came out flying. Coach Bert quelled the panic on the bench and the Thunderbirds tightened ranks, buckled down defensively and slowly chipped away at the sizable deficit. By the beginning of the third they were only down by two, and with 2 minutes left they had taken the lead 9 – 8. An empty netter by Jaron Panamick iced the comeback and the Thunderbirds had overcome the seemingly insurmountable, extended their winning streak, and won 10–8. The remaining two victories were tight right up until the third, when the relentless offensive onslaught by the Thunderbirds proved too much for the Bruins, as M’Chigeeng won game two 9–6, and game three 12–6. Way to go team! The Atom champions are: Goalie Chase Cada-Bayer, defense Sadie Bridgeman, Ava Corbiere, Aspen Debassige, Amisk Migwans and forwards Destiney Bebonang, Jack Bridgeman, Jaiden Ense- Rollo, Hannah Lovelace, Ian McCauley, Gnaajwi Migwans, Ryland Migwans, Jaron Panamick and Harmony Panamick. Parents and guardians of the champions would like to extend their thanks to the team’s staff; the unflappable Head Coach Bert Panamick, Assistant Coach Christian Kaiser-Fox, Assistant Coach and Trainer Dianne Glasby-Debassige and Manager Jarrielle Thomas. Awesome job everyone and congrats on such a memorable season.
MBA Spring 2018 Basketball Program
The Manitoulin Basketball Association is back for their spring season and is offering a great number of opportunities. The MBA is offering both Junior (Grade 1 -4) and Intermediate (Grade5 – 8) options at three locations, LCPS, CMPS and C.C. McLean! The Junior program will be in the 6:30 – 7:30 pm slot and the veterans will take the next hour.
The cost for the Juniors is just $60 received by March 12 or $70 by March 26.
The Intermediates is still $70 for the early birds or $80 by March 26. Three on Three Tournament invite!
There is a call out for women over 18 who are interested in playing in the Sault for their three on three tournament in the “Fun” level division on March 26 to 29.
