Pancake Day, which is otherwise known as Shrove Tuesday, falls between February 2 and March 9, depending on the date for Easter. It is always the day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday and the beginning of the 40 days leading up to Easter. This year it fell on Tuesday, February 13.

Today is “Valentine’s Day” for everybody out there to enjoy. It’s a day for everyone to express love towards all the people in their lives they care for, young or old. Above all things, we should all believe in love and remember love is not a big thing; it’s a million little ones. We hope you all have a wonderful day.

Family Day was originally created to give people time to spend with their families but it also provides a day off between New Years Day and Good Friday as they are approximately three months apart. So, if you’re one of the lucky ones to get this day off, have fun and make the most of this long awaited holiday. You may even consider trying to catch the “big one”.
Ontario Family Fishing Events is a province-wide opportunity for Canadian residents to fish Ontario waters without the otherwise mandatory fishing version outdoors card. The Ontario Government designates two periods throughout the year as license-free, February 17-19, 2018 (12:01 a.m. Saturday to 11:59 p.m. Monday) and June 30-July 8, 2018 (12:01 a.m. Saturday to 11:59 p.m. Sunday). During all other time periods, Canadian residents between the ages of 18 and 64 years must purchase a valid fishing license to legally fish in Ontario.
The Community of Christ Church in Providence Bay welcomed a new pastor at the beginning of the year. Dawn Dawson, of Spring Bay, became the church’s pastor and has great plans for her church.
“We are the last church here in Providence Bay and we would like to use our geographic position on the water as a beacon of light shining for others to find,” said Pastor Dawson. “Our mission is to proclaim the peace of Jesus while creating a community where all are welcome.”
Pastor Dawson has plans for the community for the upcoming Family Day. On Sunday, February 18, a family service will be held with music, poems and readings from the Bible. She will also be busy this summer, with plans for five weddings already in the works. “The Church is not just Sunday morning,” she said, “we are a community of faith.” By Betty Bardswich in The Manitoulin Expositor February 7, 2018.
Everyone is welcome to join the Community of Christ Church. Service is held every Sunday at 11 am. You can contact Pastor Dawson at 705-377-5003.
We’d like to continue doing community shout outs in the New Year for the Providence Bay News and Notes every couple of weeks. If there is someone that you’d like to give a shout out to, please let us know. And in fact, if you have anything that you would like to contribute, please let us know. We know that there is a lot going on in our community but let’s allow everyone to know. If there is an upcoming birthday, anniversary, fundraiser or celebration, please let us know. You can email Cheryl at prov_chick@hotmail.com or call her at 705-862-1613. Submissions must be received by each Sunday at 3:00 pm for submission in the following Wednesday publication of the paper. We look forward to hearing from you.
