Congratulations to the Atom Panthers who went 6 and 0 and came home Champions of the Wrightway Atom A tournament this past weekend in Sturgeon Falls.
The team had a stunning GAA of 0.5 over the 6 games with two shutouts by Kalli Jones and one by Izzy Hughson. Special Congrats to Kyle Nodecker on his first ever Panther goal.
Congrats to the William McComb, Keannu Bisschops, Zach “Double Dion” Seguin, Zee Zaagaasge, Jack Carter, Kohyn Eshkawkogan, Jack Koehler, Kyle Nodecker, Noah Grenier, Greyson Orford, Jackson Nobel, Gage Hughson, Corbin Best, Izzy Hughson, and Kalli Jones. Their coaching staff included: Jacqueline Carter, Janet McComb, Clayton Best and Kevin Eshkawkogan.
Island volleyball
Last Thursday, after two previous postponements, the Island Elementary Volleyball Champions finally took place with beautiful weather. In Little Current, the girls’ teams finalized an extended season with a great day of competition. The host school, LCPS, was undefeated on the day and swept to victory. Congratulations to Coach Tim Lockeyer and players: Autumn Deschenes, Dakota Mishibinijima, Aysia Debassige, Jenna Taylor, Whittier Gauthier and Trinity Behm. Missing on the day were teammates: Zara Farquhar and Hillary McBane.
At the Wasse Abin High School and in their amazing setting, the boys got twice as much play time with their twin gyms. The CMPS Eagles defended their title with a very tight tournament. With so much parity in the skill this year almost all of the games were close right down to the wire. Assiginack and Central Manitoulin were so close that it took Little Current to take a single set from APS to split their match to allow the Eagles to sneak by with eight points to seven.
Congratulations to players: Ethan Cooper, Aiden McCarthy, Liam Bridgeman, Carter Moggy, Jacob Wilson and Liam Lariviere. Two players, Noah Thorpe and Zach Gibbons, were unable to make the event and were greatly missed. Coaches Bruce Lindsay and Andre Leblanc were very proud of their young charges who had been training since September. The pair were also thankful for the “Red Shirt” teammates who stuck it out as training partners for the duration. The trophy also belongs to Zach Cooper, Brandon Spek, Zack Bond and honorary “Red Shirter” Chloe Peltier.

Congratulations to Dana Lewis and her Sudbury Lady Wolves Midget BB, who won the gold medal in Cambridge over the weekend. Dana earned her fourth shut-out in four days as they swept another event with a 2-0 win in the Gold Medal game versus Belleville. It was a great weekend for the Team and goalies as they head back North with a record for the Tournament, 17 goals for, 0 goals against! As of this weekend, the Sudbury Lady Wolves Midget-BB, has been ranked 3rd overall in rankings in Ontario of the OWHA, perhaps after this clean sweep it will boost them up to 1st or 2nd! Go Lady Wolves, Go!
B.J Memorial winners
Hats off to the A Champions of the annual, B.J. Corbiere Memorial Tournament. The Wiky T-Birds winners include: Lyle Baibomcowai, Quintin Recellot, Dustin Homer, Brenden Pheasant, Jesse Petier, Brandon Corbiere, Travis Jones, Launie Pheasant, Paygibe Wabano, Lyndon Madahbee, Brandon Pheasant, Duke Petier and Jason Peltier. The exciting championship game featured the silver medalist Couchie Gang: Kyle Debassige, Zack Mathewson, Hunter Abotossaway, Alex St.Marseilles, Justice Corbiere, Bodell Turner, Jeremy Couchie, Zack Rolston, Mitchal Payette, Talon McGregor, Cole King and Jackson Gunner.
In the Women’s division Earl’s Girls hoisted the trophy thanks to: Treena Debassige, Stephanie Legault, Shelby Small, Victoria Pitawanakwat, Cassandra Lauzon, Marley Patterson, Brooke Addison, Karlene Fox, Amber Debassige, Deidre Debassige, Jamie Ricci, Cheyenne Bates-Saucier and of course their namesake coach Earl Debassige.
First Indigenous woman to play on Canadian Olympic hockey team!
Brigette Lacquette is from the tiny Manitoba community of Mallard and will playing for the Canadian Women’s Olympic Team. Her hometown is four hours north of Winnepeg and Lacquette figures there are only about 50 people in the town. Brigette will try and extend their gold medal run to five in a row with their trip to Pyeone Chang, South Korea. Good luck to Brigette and the rest of the team, including Sudbury’s own Rebecca Johnston.
