Motor vehicle collision claims life of Espanola man
On Wednesday, December 13, at approximately 2:17 pm, members of the Espanola detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) with the assistance of the Sudbury-Manitoulin District Emergency Medical Services (EMS) responded to a two-vehicle collision on Highway 17 Baldwin Township.
A westbound pick-up truck collided with an eastbound transport truck. The driver of the pick-up truck was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.
As a result of further investigation, the OPP were advised that the driver passed away in hospital. The investigation is still ongoing.
The deceased has been identified as 71-year-old Robert Piche of Espanola.
Highway 17 was closed for approximately 1.5 hours before being re-opened.
Wiky woman nabbed for trafficking
On December 12, the Wikwemikong Tribal Police conducted an investigation into the offence of possession for the purpose of trafficking. As a result of the investigation, the Wikwemikong Tribal Police arrested one female from Wiikwemkoong for possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine contrary to s. 5(2) of the Controlled Drugs and Substance Act. The investigation also revealed the female to be in possession of hydromorph contin and offence-related property.
A 39-year-old is charged with: one count possession for the purpose of trafficking a schedule I substance to wit, cocaine; one count possession of property obtained by crime; and one count possession of a schedule I substance to wit, hydromorph contin.
The accused was released on a promise to appear and will attend court in Wiikwemkoong on January 24 to answer to the charges.

Stuff a cruiser event for Manitoulin Food Bank a success
On Friday, December 15, members from the Manitoulin Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) hosted the first annual Stuff a Cruiser event at Island Foodland in Mindemoya.
The event was held to replenish the Manitoulin Family Resources Food Bank throughout the holiday season.
OPP members collected non-perishable food items, monetary donations and toys between the hours of 12 and 7 pm.
Community members donated $1,880.50 in cash and a considerable donation of non-perishable food and toys.
The OPP and Island Foodland want to thank local and area customers for their extremely generous support and contributions to make this such a successful event!
