The Mustangs are getting ready for Christmas with lots of fun events. The MSS Christmas Talent Show took place on Thursday, December 7. Hosted by April Torkopoulos and Isaac Gosse, the Talent Show had everybody clapping and cheering. April and Isaac entertained the crowd with their wit and banter between acts, getting many groans for their jokes and puns. The lineup featured the Junior and Senior Band; Ezra Jones; a wind ensemble; Zoe Peltier; Carissa Holliday; Izzy Morin; JD Herlehy; Jacob Bebamash; Isaac Gosse; Josh Desbiens; Vocal Group; Kendra Jordison; myself; Mr. Nelson; Mr. Theijsmeijer; Mr. Kategiannis; Mr. Mohamed; and Mr. Scott. Audience and performers alike were blown away by Kendra Jordison singing ‘O Holy Night,’ and the teacher band consisting of Mr. Scott, Mr. Nelson, Mr. Theijsmeijer and Mr. Kategiannis. The teacher band’s lead singer Tom Sweaty, otherwise known as Mr. Scott, performed his final song as an MSS teacher, singing ‘You Don’t Know How I Feel’ and ‘Running Down a Dream.’ The students and staff stood for an ovation as Mr. Scott sang for his last time.
On Thursday evening, the Island Christmas Concert took place at MSS. Mr. Theijsmeijer, Emily Savage and Isaac Gosse organized a very successful concert. The concert was to raise money for the music programs in schools on the Island. Lakeview, C.C. Maclean, Little Current, Pontiac and CMPS choirs performed Christmas carols. To open the concert, the Senior Band played ‘O Canada’ followed by ‘Jingle Bell Rock’ and ‘Frosty the Snowman,’ to get the audience energized. The Little Current choir sang ‘A wish for peace’ and ‘Deck the Halls.’ C.C. MacLean then sang, ‘Hurry Santa’ and ‘Make a Difference.’ The Lakeview singers performed ‘Frosty the Snowman’ and ‘The Christmas Cup Song.’ CMPS sang ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas’ and ‘Silent Night.’ The last elementary school performance was by the Pontiac Guitar Ensemble, who performed a three part round and ‘The First Noel.’ This was the end of the first half of the show, and during intermission audience members were able to buy treats, as well as sponsor the SHARE/Go Green Brick by Brick campaign. Following the intermission, The MSS Vocal Group sang ‘Deck the Nutcracker Hall’ and ‘You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch,’ to which the band members, and audience members, sang along quietly, bouncing to the fun song. Junior Band played ‘Nighthawk’ and ‘Up on the Housetop’ and invited the audience to sing along.
The MSS Vocal Group returned to the stage to sing ‘Silent Night’ and ‘Hallelujah.’ Kendra Jordison, Isaac Gosse, Carissa Holliday and Izzy Morin performed their solos from the talent show earlier in the day. Kendra sang ‘O Holy Night,’ Isaac played ‘You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch’ on his saxophone, Carissa sang ‘I’ll Be Home,’ and Izzy sang ‘Hallelujah.’ The last performance of the evening was the Senior Band with ‘The William Tell Overture,’ Disney’s ‘Magical Marches,’ and ‘Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.’ To close the concert, the band played ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas,’ sending everyone into the evening with a song on their lips and the holidays on their minds. The concert was enjoyed by band, choir and audience members alike.
The MSS boys’ basketball teams have played two games of their regular seasons. The first game against Espanola was a hard game for both the Juniors and Seniors because Espanola has a summer league and the boys train year-round. The second game against W.C. Eaket was a better game, the Juniors winning their game 46-12. Both the Junior and Senior teams are looking forward to improving their skills on the court.
The girls’ hockey team had a tournament in London on December 4 to December 6. The team rallied, and came out in second place of the B division, meaning a fourth place finish overall. The boys’ hockey team had a game against Espanola on home ice, on December 8. The Mustangs won 6-5.
Students’ Council is organizing the Winter Semi-Formal, giving students the opportunity to dress up and have a night of dancing with their friends. The dance will be on December 21, from 9 pm until midnight. Tickets are $8 per person and $12 for a couple. That is also the night alumni return to MSS for awards night.
With winter sports and Christmas concerts, the staff and students of MSS are in the mood for Christmas. ‘Til next time, stay golden, Mustangs.
