The MSS halls are bustling as the Mustangs continue their athletic seasons, campaigns to change the world and artistic opportunities.
The MSS Mustang senior boys’ volleyball team travelled to OFSSA in Woodbridge on Wednesday, November 22. The boys had their first game on Thursday afternoon against Quinte Secondary School, losing the first set 21-25, and the second set 23-25. They won their second match against Ursula Franklin Academy, 25-5, and 25-11. On Friday, they played against Durham, losing the first set 17-25 and the second set 22-25. Their last game of the round robin was against Romeo-Dallaire, which the Mustangs won 25-15 and 25-18. In consolation quarter finals, MSS defeated Mackenzie in straight sets: 26-24, 25-21, 31-29. During the consolation semi-finals against Rockway, MSS battled hard but lost three sets: 25-22, 25-19, 34-32.
Bryce Draper, a five-year MSS volleyball player, said, “We played very hard. We had times we got in slumps but managed to get out of them quickly. My favourite part of the tournament was just being there with the boys. To compete in a high level with the guys you’ve played with for five years is definitely special.”
The boys’ basketball tryouts have started up, and both the junior and senior teams have been practicing hard. The teams will be finalized in the upcoming weeks. The senior and junior girls’ volleyball teams have both started tryouts as well. The girls’ hockey team beat Espanola High School 6-0 on Thursday, November 23. This was the first shut out of the season, and Coach Addison was very proud of her goalies: Sophie Bondi and Gabby Corbiere.
The Students’ Council and Three Fires shoe box campaign is well underway. The boxes will be filled with school supplies, small toys and toiletries, and then sent to Northern communities for Christmas. Each homeroom class has a shoebox, and the class that fills the most boxes will get a free taco lunch. In addition to the shoe boxes, Three Fires is also running a clothing drive. Any community donations can be dropped off in the big, yellow box in the front foyer.
SHARE/Go Green’s campaign, Brick by Brick, is under way. SHARE has 5,000 Lego bricks that can be sponsored for $2 each, in order to raise $10,000 to donate to WE.org. The money will go towards building a school in a developing country. SHARE will be selling bricks at lunch times, through a homeroom Give Change to Make Change Challenge and in the community.
Students’ Council is getting ready for the 12 days of Christmas activities. Many groups in the school have activities planned, including dodgeball, cookie decorating, karaoke, and candy-grams. Also in the holiday spirit, the Students’ Council is organizing the Winter Formal. The dance will be on December 21, from 9 pm to midnight. Ticket sales will begin shortly.
The MSS Arts’ Council has begun organizing the Winter Talent Show! There are many slots available, and any talent is encouraged: juggling, singing, playing an instrument, dance, or comedy. Anyone interested can talk to Mr. Theijsmeijer for more details. In the second week of December, the MSS Senior Band and Vocal group will be travelling to the elementary schools around the Island to perform Christmas music.
