PROVIDENCE BAY—There have been some changes lately to the beautiful town of Providence Bay. The old Home Hardware building has been completely revamped with an Island-themed large scale mural on the south side of the building and art galleries, jewelry spots, fibre art, weaving and the Peace Café on the inside.
Manitoulin Streams worked at the mouth of the Mindemoya River to plant trees and shrubs and partially divert the water, a new bridge has been installed in this area, flowers are everywhere in the town in the summer and the Interpretive Centre has been completely revamped.
Town pride is clearly evident in the yearly cleaning of the beach, the hosting of breakfasts, euchre parties, the famous rib and corn dinner that serves hundreds, the work of the Lions Club in securing an excellent children’s playground, along with exercise stations on the beach and the winning of The Expositor’s Harvest competition once again.
A new development will make the town even more special. Architect, urban planner and artist Peter Favot’s project will see four new semi-detached residences, planned for Spring 2018, situated on Campbell Street.
A quick Google search showed that Mr. Favot is an enterprising fellow indeed. As well as having a Bachelor of Architecture degree from the University of Toronto, he also holds a Masters Architecture degree in urban design and planning. He holds professional licenses not only in Ontario, but also in several US states. He also holds Lateral Forces, Seismic and Hurricane Certification from the USA National Council of Architectural Registration Boards. His projects include multiple housing developments, industrial complexes, shopping centres, office facilities, university and community college projects, housing for developing countries and the development of resort communities and health facilities. Mr. Favot’s projects are part of the Archives of Ontario. He has received many awards and prizes and holds several patents.
This new project in Providence Bay is owned by Creative Land Holdings Inc. and Wood Vaults Research Inc. and will feature two models. The first is a two-bedroom, one floor-no basement residence at 1,233 square feet, plus a garage.
The second model is a three-bedroom semi-detached residence which features two floors, no basement, and is 1,648 square feet in size (plus garage).
Some of the features of these new additions include a large property, large 12’ by 10’ screened porches, slab on grade construction with in-floor hot water radiant heating, high insulation standards, HRV ventilation systems, vinyl siding, low maintenance metal roofing and single car garages. The monthly condominium fees are due to the small number of units, low maintenance exterior materials, no common building areas to maintain and existing heavily wooded landscape.
The new residences offer a few minutes walk to the beach or the Mutchmor Gallery. As Mr. Favot said, “the town is fortunate to have such natural assets as its waterfront, beaches and its people. It’s future is guaranteed.”
