Public Mischief charge
On August 15, 2017 Espanola Police Service were contacted by the manager of a local business reporting an alleged theft of lottery scratch tickets, one of which had been cashed in at another local business. Police commenced an investigation and with the assistance of the Ontario Lottery and Gaming commission determined that the scratch tickets had not in fact been stolen from the store, and were still in the store on the date of the initial incident. Further investigation determined that the store owner had been in possession of the alleged stolen tickets after the initial inquiry was conducted by OLG, but she had subsequently instructed the manager to report them stolen to police.
As a result of the investigation a 61 year old female resident of Markham was charged with the offence of Public Mischief. She will appear in Espanola court on October 2, 2017.
Uttering Threats
On August 15, 2017 Espanola Police Service received a report of a male that had just threatened another male at his residence and left the scene in a vehicle. Police conducted an investigation and determined that the suspect had attended the victim’s residence and threatened the victim and his family, in an attempt to dissuade the victim’s father from testifying against the man in another outstanding criminal matter.
As a result of the investigation a 27 year old Espanola man was charged with 4 counts of Uttering Threats, one count of Intimidation of a Justice Participant, and one count of Failing to Comply with Probation. He was held in custody for a bail hearing.
Trespassing and Being Intoxicated in Public charges
On August 15, 2017 Espanola Police Service were called to attend a residence on Albert Street regarding a male at that residence causing a disturbance. Police attended the scene and located a male at that location who was in an intoxicated condition, and was yelling at his brother who was inside the residence. The complainants had instructed the male to leave, but he had remained at the residence and continued yelling. Upon arrival, police discovered the male involved had also been spoken to by police earlier that same evening after causing a disturbance at a local restaurant.
As a result of the investigation, the 53 year old Webbwood man was arrested for Trespassing and Being Intoxicated in a Public Place. He was held until sober and issued fines in relation to those offences.
Criminal Harassment and Failing to Comply with Undertaking
On August 16, 2017, Espanola Police Service received a complaint from a female that her ex-boyfriend had been following her and attending her place of work, despite being on conditions to remain away from her. Police conducted an investigation and determined that the male had been previously charged for criminal harassment against the same female, and was placed on conditions to stay away from her, her residence as well as her place of employment. The investigation determined that since the initial charges the male had repeatedly followed the victim, attended her place of employment, and engaged in behaviour that was intimidating in nature toward the victim during those encounters.
As a result of the investigation, a 19 year old man from Espanola was arrested for Criminal Harassment and Failing to Comply with Undertaking. He was held in custody for a bail hearing.
Intoxication
On August 16, 2017 at approximately 10:21 pm, a male attended the Espanola Police Service and stated that he wanted to report the theft of prescription marijuana from his residence. Police had previously attended the male’s residence that same evening regarding a disturbance, and the male was found to be intoxicated at that time. Officers attended in the police station lobby and discovered the male passed out in a chair as a result of his level of intoxication. Officers were also aware from prior investigations that the male does not have a valid prescription for marijuana. Upon being awoken by the officers, the male was observed to be in a very intoxicated condition and he was arrested to ensure his safety.
As a result of the incident, the 16 year old Espanola youth was held in custody until sober and issued a $65 fine.
Failing to Comply with Recognizance
On August 17, 2017, Espanola Police received a complaint from a female that a male who was on conditions to remain away from her had repeatedly attended at her place of employment, in contravention of his bail conditions. Police investigation revealed that on several occasions the male had attended her place of employment at a local fast food restaurant, and each time had sat in a chair staring at her for an extended period of time while she worked.
As a result of the investigation, a 23 year old Espanola man was arrested and charged with the offence of Failing to Comply with Recognizance. He will appear in Espanola court on September 18, 2017.
Failing to Comply with Undertaking
On August 21, 2017, Espanola Police received a complaint of a male on Avery Drive walking back and forth in front of a residence, yelling and swearing toward the residence. The male was identified by the complainant, and was known to police to be on an Undertaking with a condition not to consume alcohol as a result of previous criminal charges. Police attended the scene and located the male, and observed him to be in a very intoxicated condition, in contravention of his Undertaking condition.
As a result of the investigation, a 28 year old Espanola man was arrested and charged with the offence of Failing to Comply with Undertaking. He will appear in Espanola court on September 18, 2017.
Assault with a Weapon
On August 30, 2017, Espanola Police were called to attend a residence on Bass Lake Road regarding a complaint of an assault that had just occurred. Officers attended the scene and determined that a male had assaulted his brother by throwing rocks and attempting to strike him with a tree branch. The violence had apparently erupted during an ongoing dispute over property boundaries between the brothers’ adjoining lands.
As a result of the investigation, a 57 year old Espanola man was arrested and charged with the offence of Assault with a Weapon. He will appear in Espanola court on October 23, 2017.
Theft Under $5000
On September 1st 2017 Espanola Police were once again called to attend a local grocery store regarding a shoplifter apprehended by store security. Police attended and determined that a 52 year old female had stolen several pharmacy items and two chocolate bars, valued at approximately $40.
As a result of the investigation the Gore Bay woman was arrested and charged with the offence of Theft Under $5000. She will appear in Espanola court on October 2nd, 2017.
The woman was also trespassed from entering any of the grocery store chain locations, including those in Sudbury and other communities.
