VARLEY JOHN VANHORNE

Varley John VanHorne, a resident of Mindemoya, died peacefully at Manitoulin Centennial Manor, on Friday, August 25, 2017 at the age of 97. Born to Elizabeth (nee Cooper) and William VanHorne, at Mindemoya, on June 16, 1920. Survived by beloved wife Repha VanHorne, daughter Diane Melville and son Perry (Linda) VanHorne. Will be missed by grandchildren Cathy (Steve) Marshall, Chris VanHorne and Derek (Hollie) VanHorne. Cherished great-grandfather of Ryan, Andrew, Sarah, Elizabeth, Colby, Cohen and Reese. Brother of Bayward (predeceased) (Ellen), Olive Elliott (Alvin) (both predeceased), Garfield (predeceased), Beryle Sim (Miles) (both predeceased), Grant (predeceased) (Joan), Clayton (Glenna) and Gordon (Mavis) (both predeceased). Will always be remembered by many nieces, nephews and friends. With limited work on the Manitoulin Varley found employment operating heavy equipment in Durham and Sault Ste. Marie. Not a fan of dust and regular equipment failures he returned to the Island where he spent four years sailing the Great Lakes coal and grain ships. Always away from family, he decided to settle down close to home working at Ray Wagg’s sawmill, drove Anglin’s school bus until 1950 when hired by Department of Highways. Retired in 1987 from MTO as a patrolman. A devoted father, grandfather and “Uncle Varley” to many. He loved spending time with family and friends. In 1982 he was appointed Sunday School Superintendent of the Missionary Church. He loved woodworking, hunting, fishing, gardening, cutting wood, making maple syrup and especially feeding his ducks. In the community he was known as a handyman, always willing to lend a hand. In Varley’s own words “I wouldn’t consider living anywhere else but Manitoulin. It’s peaceful and friendly people make this island so special. This is truly the Garden of Eden.” Family and friends gathered at Mindemoya Missionary Church. Visitation was on Sunday, August 27, 2017 from 3 pm to 7 pm. Funeral Service was held at 2 pm on Monday, August 28, 2017 with Pastor Dan Thompson officiating. Burial at Mindemoya Cemetery.
