Southern ontario residents lucky to be uninjured in motor vehicle accident
A southern Ontario man and his daughter are lucky to have not received injuries following an accident that took place in Gore Bay this past Saturday.
The accident involving a van that the man from southern Ontario was driving took place late in the afternoon of Saturday, August 12.
The driver of the van, who did not want to be named in the story, told the Recorder he was driving on Water Street when an oncoming vehicle, who was speeding, entered his lane and he was forced to move over. Upon moving over, he hit the side of the road and went into the ditch.
Incredibly, neither the man and his daughter sustained injuries. The vehicle sustained minor damage.
Stolen credit card in Gore Bay used to make 186 purchases
An Espanola area woman has been charged with fraud after stealing a credit card from a man in Gore Bay and using the card to make 186 purchases.
The Espanola police report the woman used the tap feature of the credit card to spend more than $5,000 in purchases on the card. The police report that the 24-year-old woman has been charged with fraud and possession of property obtained by crime. A man’s wallet had been stolen from his home while he was a client at a care facility in Gore Bay. Police officers identified the accused using surveillance cameras at one of the shops where the credit card was used.
Haweater calls for service down
The Haweater Weekend celebrated its 50th anniversary earlier this month. The annual festival, which occurs in Little Current, was once again a successful and well attended event on scenic Manitoulin Island.
Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) members responded to eighty-three (83) calls for service in the Little Current detachment area over the course of the weekend. A strategic operational plan resulted in proactive police activities combined with direct patrols and enforcement efforts by Manitoulin OPP, S.A.V.E. and H.S.D. members, an OPP release explains.
These efforts resulted in 17 arrests including the apprehension of one impaired driver. Ten Criminal Code charges and 35 Liquor Licence Act charges were also laid, reports the OPP. The majority of the calls for service involved minor incidents related to noise complaints and Liquor Licence Act offences. There were no reports criminal code related incidents at any of the Haweater Festival venues.
Manitoulin OPP Detachment Commander Staff Sergeant Kevin Webb extended his appreciation to all the volunteers. He said, “our members value and are committed to the partnership between the OPP and event organizers to ensure a safe, secure and enjoyable event for everyone.”
