PSW support letter
The Manor board reviewed the first draft of a letter being crafted to the premier and the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care, advocating for personal support working in the long-term care field. Feedback was provided by the board members which will be incorporated into the final draft.
Administrators report
Manor Administrator Michelle Bond presented her report to the board. She was pleased to note that the Manor didn’t use any agency staff last month.
“We have five PSW vacancies that we have been advertising, but we have received three applications,” said Ms. Bond.
She said that the new call bell system is being installed and will be fully functioning in three weeks. The new system was made possible thanks to a fundraising campaign to raise money to replace the home’s ailing nursing call bell system, the communication system between the nurse’s desk, the residents’ rooms and common areas—when assistance is required by a resident, the bell is rung and the nurses on the desk respond.
Ms. Bond explained the new system will include display panels in each hallway which will save nurses having to run back to the station to see which residents are in need.
“We overspent in food last month, but this is mainly due to implementing the spring/summer menu and because the proceeds of the Canada Day barbecue won’t be reflected until next month,” said Ms. Bond.
Financial report
Extendicare Regional Director Keith Clement said that the home was anticipating a $6,000 surplus for last month, but that it came in at a $4,500 surplus due to an employee being off in the laundry department with a broken arm and repair work to the boiler. He said that even with the drop in the anticipated surplus, year-to-date the Manor was still $19,000 better than budget.
Fundraising
Board member Wendy Gauthier reported that volunteers were working on a float for the Haweater Weekend parade. She also reported that ticket sales for the Ivan Wheale painting were going well and that sales were at $3,625, with the goal to reach $5,000, the value of the painting. The ticket sales bring the total fundraised for patient ceiling lifts to $40,000, over half of the $75,000 goal.
The board will not be meeting in August. The next Manitoulin Centennial Board Meeting will be held on Thursday, September 21.
