Recommends the books of retired Canadian general Romeo Dallaire
To the Expositor:
Kudos to whoever wrote the July 12 editorial (‘The rule of law must apply equally to all,’ Page 4).
In Omar Khadr’s case the rule of law was certainly not applied as it should have been. This editorial gives us a much broader view on the situation than we are often given. Since the Rwanda genocide in 1994 Romeo Dallaire has been my hero. I have read his books ‘Shake Hands with the Devil,’ ‘They Fight Like Soldiers, They Die Like Children,’ and ‘Waiting for First Light: My Ongoing Battle with PTSD.’ I want to get views on a subject from all sides. I now have a much better understanding of child soldiers. Omar Khadr was one of them. I also have a much better understanding of PTSD and how our veterans are affected after their military tours or those in other occupations that deal with horrible situations that affect them forever. I also realize how difficult it is to return child soldiers to normal life.
I would thoroughly recommend these books of Romeo Dallaire’s if you wish to learn more. I also support the Child Soldiers Initiative through Dalhousie University that seeks to eliminate the use of child soldiers.
