Tehkummah Talk & Times

July 5, 2017

“Glow little glow worm, glow and glimmer.” Do they only shine for one night?

We had our first outdoor picnic on Tuesday evening. Just Ray, Tara and Skylar, and me, of course. I helped pick a few Shitake mushrooms. I tired out rapidly. I roasted a small chicken and we had assorted salads.

This morning I dropped in to Joan’s after getting the call that her sister Pat had passed away around 6 am. A busy house, Dave and Barb, and Dodds and Jovette were there for each other.

We repeated the visit this evening adding Susan, Pauline and Mum. Lots of good reminiscing was going on. Stories and laughs from early years and adventures.

Mark spent the day with family and his mom here, after getting the news.

It seems the cousins get together in the sad times.

Cal and I went for a little drive after cribbage and found the usual spot to eat. Earl had been to Sudbury this day. Carol is having treatment. Thinking of you.

Laurene Holloway spent last weekend in Wiarton. Spent quality time with family and friends and attended her sister Faye’s Celebration of Life.

Summer is officially here, Anna and Hart are back at their cottage for the season.

I met a couple of Wiarton folk at the Garden Shed on Friday morning. They read me! Their names, Joan and Frank (I think).

A surprise was waiting at Mum’s front door when we returned. Her friend Shirley Paulin was waiting to greet her. She went to the market at the hall soon after. She was travelling with her sister and niece. It had been a couple of years since the last visit to the Island.

Along with Canada Day, Dorothy Cronk celebrated her birthday with breakfast with friends Bev at the Garden Shed and Mary. I checked out Belgian Waffles on the Waterfront. Mmm.

The market seemed fairly busy for the first one. I took Mum to the Garden Shed before, and Susan. Joining us was Chris and her daughter Tammy. We had a lot of laughs.

Well wasn’t this a busy weekend! Mum and I took in all South Baymouth events on Saturday. Wasn’t the parade fabulous? It is the best for such a small town! Mum rode with nephew Dave in his nice car. The weather co-operated nicely, despite threatening clouds and cooling winds. We took in the fireworks on the waterfront with Cal in the evening. We got to see fireworks again on Sunday evening as we left Gib and Florence’s in Mindemoya, the roundup of their homecoming weekend. A spectacular show! We watched from Foodland parking lot. We had changed church time with Manitowaning, so they could celebrate their 140th Knox anniversary and I slept in here at home! 10:30?

Part of our family spent their weekend with Travis and Alicia in Gore Bay this year, campout and fun (rain?) Dave, Ray and Marg just did Saturday day! Saw lots of folk to visit. Hope your Canada Day 150 was special and, no, I don’t know what happened to my column last week!

Cribbage results, 24 hands (4) Betty Jean, Mary, Florence and Graham; first, Janet and Glenn, 944; second, Ruth and Bill, 939; third, Cal and Audrey, 933; low, Betty Jean and Bill, 854; door, Doris, Hugh and Brad.

This week we had a bid euchre practice too. First one this Thursday at 7:30 pm.

No euchre results, sorry.

Sunday afternoon at Budd Park George Williamson is having an “open mic.” Music was lovely. Lori and Thomas also assisted with music and song, starts at 1 pm

“Happy Canada Day 150.”

Can you believe a half a year gone already? The weather, I think, makes it feel like this isn’t so but the calendar says yes!

I say no to the rain, but just maybe it will get it out of its system before the holiday weekend. Lots of doings as usual down our way. South Baymouth usually has the best parade and the best fish fry and the best firemen’s yard sale.

The museum has a bake sale and their silent auction and BBQ and they give out free ice cream after the parade. Always a great day finishing with the fireworks at the harbour! Usually spectacular! About a month ago now, great-grandson Jacob received, at the Caruso Club banquet, an award for his music and school attendance (aboriginal award) congrats!

Monday afternoon, a good U.C.W. meeting at Bev’s. Some interesting topics and always finish with a delicious lunch and rhubarb cake, whipped cream and fresh strawberries for dessert.

What would I ever talk about if I didn’t eat? Started the day with steak!

Cassandra stopped in and we had a nice visit in the yard. I’m reclining on the bed, writing, putting in time before Bingo, just stuck a couple of tomato plants in the ground. My gardening is in mini stages; my resting is done in max!

In the last few years I hadn’t seen many of the original solar lights! Did you ever catch a jarful of lightening bugs when you were a kid and put them on your dresser (before we had electricity too) for a night-light?

Scott’s field was aglow with them tonight (Friday the 23rd) and I even had a couple doing a light show for me on my window.

Cal and I had an ice cream from Huron Lodge, my first taste of ice cream this year, and watched ferry traffic (about 50 off, 20 on).

My life is the half-time show! I enjoy it more; I don’t run to the fridge when it’s on. I savour whatever action I can find, and laugh at or sleep through the actual movie! Lord, it tires me out!

What a lovely Seniors Citizens Month Triangle Club birthday party. We had about 50 folk attend, enjoying the Islanders good music. A terrific pot luck supper afterwards and a most delicious trifle dessert. Thanks musicians Lyle, Gordie, Norm, Harold, Peter. I read a couple of stories from the Seniors Horizon Magazine (for Linda), Mum sang ‘Silver Haired Daddy Of Mine.

Tara got her garden in today, the 20th.

Wednesday evening, Cal and I went to Sandfield euchre, a lot of fun. I should have brought home the winners names; I knew the men’s high was because our last game we got 14, Cal won lones on a cut!

We had eight tables for cribbage on Wednesday, it’s always fun. We’d have a full house if all the players came the same day. Our lunches are always so good. Mum’s homemade buns and Janet’s banana split cake, lots more I never know who all brings what? High hand, Joy, 24; first, Gib and Florence, 955; second, Dorothy A and Jesse, 954; third, Doris and Sandra, 924; low, Keith and Laurene, 836; door, Ruth M, Lori and Florence.

A couple of weeks ago we made the draw on the fisherman’s package and the winner was Clayton Vanhorn. This was a Triangle Club Fundraiser.

Euchre, five tables, Lorna and Rita on K.P. duty; ladies high, Dave J, 79 and three lone hands; low, Dorothy C, 43; men’s high, Andy, 74; Raymond, four lone hands; low, Don, 48; door, Dorothy C.

This has been one busy for me at least, even a practice afternoon for bid euchre. They are going to try this the first Thursday evening of the month, next week regular. Third week regular tournament, and fourth week regular euchre again. We’ll see how it goes. For information, call Margaret Case.

Missed my daughter all weekend: she was taking part in Women’s Weekend at Gordon’s Park.

My cousin Pat Leeson took a heart attack on Friday. Joan, Dave, and Barb drove up to Elliot Lake on Saturday. I popped in to Joan’s on Sunday Bordie was there and before I left Dodds and Jovette came through the door. It had been a while since I’d seen them. Joan was having a houseful of family for supper. Pat had the attack on her 87th birthday.

Speaking of birthdays, Lynda Garniss celebrated her “Plenty Month” on Saturday.

Our Strawberry Social did very well and we had a nice crowd. We sold pies this year as well. They seemed popular too. The berries were delicious!

Lori and Rick brought a nice bowl of wild strawberries in to Mum’s last Friday. They are huge this year; at least the rain is helpful that way!

I guess the Tehkummah Market starts on Friday this week, the 30th.

On Sunday we had our church service at the hall, with a delicious potluck buffet afterward. We were blessed with music from Lori and Martin, (and song) Debbie Robinson and Mum and I sang. Skylar recited a poem and did you know you have to “accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative” our second readers were Kathy, Terry, Mary and Bev. Richard, Pat and Lynda.

Cal and I met up with Gib and Florence at Carol’s and Earl’s for supper. They were busy down there. Said hello to Hugh and Barb. Afterwards we took a leisurely drive to Mindemoya, checked out the outer limit that’s quite the craft. Played about eight games of cards; Florence and I didn’t do so well this time, close game though. I played a lot of games with Mum this week too.

Watch for deer, OK.

I met a pretty little sidekick for her grandma Linda at the Strawberry Social, what a nice smile. Friend Pat Falter came down for breakfast at Garden Shed one rainy morning. I had dug some plants out before the rain so they should be growing good!
