MINDEMOYA—Over 20 participants took part in the annual Tour de Meldrum bicycling event, with an estimated $5,000-6,000 being raised for the Mindemoya hospital this year.
“We had a total of 23 riders and 26 people on hand for dinner Saturday evening,” confirmed Dr. Dale Scott, who again this year organized the event. Participants rode by bicycle from Mindemoya to Meldrum Bay Saturday morning, enjoyed dinner and stayed overnight at the Meldrum Bay Inn and then travelled back to Mindemoya on Sunday, a total ride of 105 kilometres.
“I don’t have the exact total yet on all the monies collected from this year’s ride,” Dr. Scott told the Recorder. “But it will as usual be going toward the equipment fund of the Manitoulin Health Centre (MHC) for the Mindemoya Hospital.”
“We got rained on, actually poured on, during the ride, but everyone made it and it was a good ride,” said Dr. Scott. “From Mindemoya we all stopped in Evansville for lunch and had supper at the Meldrum Bay Inn where we all stayed for the evening.”
Among those riders were two from as far away as Toronto and two riders from St. Joseph’s Island.
On the first year of this ride, Dr. Scott rode solo and then had about three participants accompany him the second and third years, with the original idea of the ride being to raise funds for the Mindemoya hospital.
Businesses and individuals in Mindemoya and the area, and outside the area, are great in contributing to this event, said Mr. Scott. Each rider also raises their own funds to take part in the ride. This year marks the 18th year the Tour de Meldrum has taken place.
