Historic Speakers Series lined up by Billings Museum Board for 2017

KAGAWONG—The Old Mill Heritage Centre in Kagawong takes its history very seriously, bringing outstanding speakers in for its annual History Day presentations and always seeming to raise the bar with each season’s exhibits. This year, in addition to its Canada 150 focus with its innovative Pearson Exhibit featuring hundreds of items associated with Canada’s only Nobel Peace Prize winner and seminal prime minister, the OId Mill Heritage Centre will be presenting an Historic Speakers Series.

Sponsored by the Billings Museum Board, the series will feature political author and host of TVO’s The Agenda, Steve Paikin, award winning journalist and best selling author of ‘Extraordinary Canadians: Lester B. Pearson’ Andrew Cohen, and Lester B. Pearson’s granddaughter journalist Patricia Pearson.

On July 12, Mr. Paikin will speak about his new book ‘Bill Davis: Nation Builder, and Not So Bland After All.’  Billings Township Mayor Austin Hunt will join the discussion to share his thoughts on working for former Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson along with Algoma Manitoulin MPP Mike Mantha. The presentation begins at 7:30 pm.

On July 19, Mr. Cohen will speak about the life and legacy of Canada’s 14th prime minister.  The presentation begins at 7:30 pm, but there is limited seating for this event which will take place at the Main Street Café.

The series will culminate with the History Day in Kagawong event featuring author and journalist Patricia Pearson who will speak about her famous grandfather, former prime minister and Algoma-East MP Lester B. Pearson. This presentation also includes a never before seen home movie of a Manitoulin school trip to visit Prime Minister Pearson in Ottawa. There are two presentations for this event, a matinee at 3:30 pm and evening presentation at 7:30 pm.

Refreshments will be available at all of the events and admission is free of charge, although donations to the Old Mill Heritage Centre will be gratefully received.
