MSS Relay For Life Friday, June 3

M’CHIGEENG—With a week to go before the Manitoulin Secondary School (MSS) Relay for Life celebrations June 2-3, the event is shaping up to a big success.

“We have about 150 people who are registered as participating and a total of 10 teams, with registration forms still coming in,” stated Leslie Marshall, one of the organizers of the MSS Relay for Life event. She said those that want to register, or have forms faxed to them, can do so by searching the website, www.relayforlife.ca/manitoulinsecondary school or by calling the school.

“We have approximately 30 cancer survivors or those that are battling cancer coming to take part in the opening ceremonies being held at 6 pm on Friday, June 2,” said Ms. Marshall. “Another big part of the evening is the luminary ceremony when families and friends light candles for those they have lost to cancer or who are battling cancer. This takes place at dusk.”

“Our committee is putting the final touches on the entertainment and activities that people can take part in,” said Ms. Marshall. The theme for this year’s Relay for Life event is “Kickin Cancer-Giving Cancer The Boot.”

“The students are very organized for the event,” said Ms. Marshall. She pointed out luminaries can be picked up at various locations around the island (including Wilson’s Store in Mindemoya, Elliott’s in Little Current, Loco Beanz in Little Current, at the Manitowaning Assiginack Township public library, Loco Beanz in Manitowaning, and Manitoulin Transport and Loco Beanz-both in Gore Bay ),” said Ms. Marshall. “The students are really excited and have a lot of spirit. I know that a few teams have already raised alot of money. Over $10,000 has been raised in total already and usually most of the money comes in the day of the relay event.”
