New Little Current club hits the ground running

LITTLE CURRENT—You can’t run away from your problems, they say, but you can certainly run toward a solution. Running, it seems, is a growing phenomenon on Island roads and trails and the more people run, the more they come to view the pastime with passion.

A trio of Little Current runners, Romme Kabron, Kasha Piche and Steve Fessenden have decided to share their love of running with other like-minded souls and have come together to form the Little Current Running Club.

Ms. Piche sat down with The Expositor to talk about the new group and what inspired them to form the club.

“(It was) Romme’s success and passion for running (that) inspired the running group,” she said. “We have been running together for some time now and he continues to inspire me every day. I am sure you have heard the saying, ‘surround yourself with people who have dreams, desire, and ambition; they’ll help you push for and realize your own.’ The group was created with this quote in mind.”

Mr. Kabron had noted that Little Current did not have its own running club, explained Ms. Piche, and together the duo decided to create one. The choice of goal was an easy one.

“Whenever I find myself conversing with another in regard to running, I often hear the same remarks,” she said. “One of the most commonly repeated remarks is, ‘I can’t run.’ Our goal is to help people realize their potential and change the community person by person. This group is about supporting runners, or aspiring runners, from all different backgrounds in their journey towards their goal and celebrating each other’s success.”

Ms. Piche began running in elementary school. “I was part of the ADHD group so they put me in athletics,” she said. “I ran up to high school, but stopped running as much. Since then I had been running off and on.” Recently she took up the sport again.

“My personal goal is to do an 18-minute five kilometre,” she said.

Mr. Fessenden, a teacher at Little Current Public School, was a great addition to the team. “He has run in more than 40 marathons,” said Ms. Piche.

One of the short term goals is to have a group of runners getting together for a run three times a week for 30 minutes, a Facebook poll favoured Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

As for age groups, “children are welcome, but they must be accompanied by an adult,” said Ms. Piche. “People can come out and walk, run or cycle,” she said. “It’s totally up to them.”

The initial route will set out from Little Current’s Low Island Park and include the waterfront.
