Assault, threats and mischief charges laid in Espanola

On May 11th, 2017 at approximately 11:51 pm, the Espanola Police Service received a call to attend an apartment on Mead Blvd, regarding a disturbance involving a female screaming inside the apartment.  Upon an officer attending the apartment, the door was opened by a male who was in an extremely agitated state, and appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and illicit drugs.  The male advance on the officer in an aggressive manner, and the officer then displayed the TASER device to attempt to gain his compliance.  The male complied briefly then began to resist, and the TASER was again displayed to gain his compliance.  After the male was successfully detained, the officers learned from the other occupants of the apartment that the suspect male had assaulted and choked a female inside the apartment prior to police arrival.  The suspect had also threatened to cause death to the female victim, and caused damage inside the residence.  During his arrest and transport to the police station, the suspect then uttered several threats to cause death or bodily harm to the investigating officer.

As a result of the incident, a 35 year old resident of Espanola was charged with one count of Assault, as well as two counts each of Utter Threats and Mischief Under $5000.  He will appear in Espanola court July 17th, 2017.

The victim involved suffered only minor injuries.
