MSS is involved in so many fun experiences and events, that even the cold, rainy, April weather can’t dampen the school spirit. On Tuesday, May 18, the MSS spring Twoonie Talent Show took place in the cafeteria during period 4. The show started off with the Grade 10 Band playing Night Hawk, followed by the Senior Band playing Beauty School Dropout from the musical Grease. These acts were followed by several soloist and group acts: Tanner Christian, who performed a skit from Spongebob; Noah Belanger playing the guitar; Jaylen McGaughey, Students’ Council, Vocal Group, Sabrina Bondi, Bryce Mastelko and Becky MacDonald, Carissa Holliday, Megan Misner and Jordan Pitawanakwat, Kendra Jordison, and I all sang; Josh Desbiens, Mr. Nelson, and Mr. Mohamed; Sam Middleton and Jacob Bebamash; and the Tom Petty and the Pacemakers Teacher Band played as ensembles. The audience cheered for every act and laughed at all the jokes from MC Jordan Moore.
Tuesday evening was the Spring Concert fundraiser for the Senior Band trip to Montreal. The concert featured the MSS Senior Band, the MSS Grade 10 band, the Central Manitoulin Public School choir, MSS Vocal Group, the Pontiac School Guitar Ensemble and MSS student soloists. The MSS Senior Band performed Broadway favourites Do-Re-Mi, Beauty and the Beast, Phantom of the Opera, Cabaret and Grease Medley. The MSS Grade 10 Band played Night Hawk and Edelweiss. The MSS Vocal Group performed Seasons of Love, Sit Down, You’re Rockin the Boat, Rhythm of Life, and the Les Miserables Medley. The CMPS choir performed Cool Kids by Echosmith, and the Pontiac Guitar Ensemble performed Ode to Joy, and a three part round. The MSS soloists performing were Kendra Jordison, Sabrina Bondi and a duet of Megan Misner with Jordan Pitawanakwat. The fundraiser made $800 for the Senior Band trip.
On April 20, Wikwemikong’s Chris Pheasant came to MSS to do a presentation on becoming an organ donor for Grades 11 and 12. The presentation was called The Gift of Life: Organ and Tissue Donation for Transplantation. Mr. Pheasant received a liver transplant three years ago and said that the entire Island rallied together to help him and his family. Mr. Pheasant spoke about what being on the waitlist for an organ is like and how long people have to wait for each of the organs before they can receive a transplant. He showed the group two videos, one of a young child who waited over two years to receive a new heart and the second was about a teenage boy who passed away in an accident, but his organs were donated and saved lives. The group learned that there are 1,500 people in Ontario waiting for an organ donor, and every three days one of these people dies. Mr. Pheasant really encouraged the Grade 11 and 12 students of MSS to become organ donors because they may someday save lives.
On Friday, April 21, there was a half-day movie day for students who sold a magazine during the magazine drive this fall. At 12:45 students with ticket filed into the cafeteria, received a free bag of popcorn and settled in to enjoy the movie with their friends.
Even with lots of April showers, MSS is looking forward to the shining sun that comes with May flowers. ‘Til next time, stay golden, Mustangs.
