Spring weather is bringing many great events to MSS. April Torkopoulos placed first at the Public Speaking Competition on Sunday, March 28 in Sudbury. April’s speech “Canada Proud” won against a speech about Vimy Ridge. April will be moving on to the Zone competition in New Liskeard on April 22.
Grade 10 students at MSS wrote the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test on March 30. Students wrote the test in the morning and were given 3 hours to complete it. The MSS testing was organized by Ms. Bauer, “The test ran smoothly. The environment was positive and calm. There were no issues whatsoever with the test because it was paper and pencil this time with a small number using assistive technology.” Students are eager to find out their results but will have to wait until the middle of June.
The MSS Gymnastics team travelled to GymZone in Sudbury for NOSSA on April 3. The team competed in uneven Bars, vault, floor, beam, novice aerobics, and open level aerobics. This year’s gymnastics team includes Eden Beaudin, Summer Beaudin, Donnshai Bruleigh,Jill Cooper, Mackenzie Cortes, Zabrina Cosby, Alyssa Green, Kendra Jordison, Yohana Ogbamichael, Roxy Rojas Brizuela, Morgan Wall. The team is coached by Mrs. Theijsmeijer and Ms. Ferguson.
Hoops for Heart is on April 13, the final event of a month-long fundraiser for The Heart and Stroke Foundation. The 10 teams participating in the fundraiser have raised over $500 for the organization so far. Open gym in the mornings at MSS is full of students practicing their basketball skills in anticipation of the fun competition.
For those interested in the arts, Artastic Fusion is holding their second Theme Contest of the year. The themes are Urban Magic, Caricature/Anime, and “Thinking Outside the Box.” Submissions are due April 13 to Mrs. Wesno. Also, sign-ups are underway for the Spring Talent Show and the SHARE/Go-Green Coffee House.
